Alex Ross
Voyeur chair. Romantic Couple Kissing and Embracing, Mid Century Illustration

1950s-1960s

About the Item

Alexander Sharpe Ross gives us a voyeur view of an attractive couple kissing and embracing on a couch. Sharpe's radical use of composition is on full display. He places an ornate wooden chair in the foreground and directs the viewer's line of sight through the chair. The chair frames the couple. It's a romantic evening with warm interior light. Cropped whisky glasses and an opened bottle of liquor are seen on a side table. The artist's masterful painting technique is as inventive as his unexpected composition. Ross applies the paint that is mixed with a painter's medium... in a very fluid way. On close examination, the paint surface is almost abstract and perhaps was influenced by the Abstract painters of the day. This work was most likely done on assignment for a major newsstand magazine like Cosmopolitan - Signed lower left Framed under acrylic. The condition of the art is very good, with some minor scuffs on the plexiglass Framed Dimensions 22 X 17.5 Inches - Provenance: From The Collection of Charles Martignette.

    By Arnold Friedman
    Located in Miami, FL
Arnold Friedman studied with Robert Henri and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League in 1905 . Yet as he developed his style he abandoned the academic influence of his teacher. He started experimenting with materials and techniques. Friedmans intimate style recalls a variety of post-impressionist artists such as Pointillism of Pisarro, Vuillard and Nabis, and perhaps even Seurat. His thick application of paint has definitive textual impasto that was influenced by his trip to Paris in 1909. In "Museum Piece...
