About the Item
Alex Sax is an artist and educator who is driven by curiosity and respect for her subject matter. She finds inspiration in nature, history and literature; and the resulting works are enlivened by her proclivity to experiment, collaborate, repurpose, remember, and imagine.
Sax’s multi-media, interdisciplinary works have been exhibited at museums, galleries, art centers, and botanical gardens across the Northeast. Venues have included Pennsylvania’s Museum of American Art and Main Line Art Center; New York’s Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center, Westchester Community College, and Hamilton College; Connecticut’s Silvermine Gallery and Flinn Gallery; New Jersey’s Montclair University and Brodsky Gallery; and Maine’s Jewish Museum, Portland Museum of Art, University of Southern Maine, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Whitney Art Works, Spring Gallery and Sculpture Garden, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, University of Southern Maine, and University of New England. Her site-specific installation, “Turtle Migration,” was created for Learners and Leaders School in Queens, NY, and was commissioned by The School Construction Authority and New York City Percent for Art.
In addition to pursuing her own creative practice, Sax has spent over two decades instructing college students in the fields of painting, drawing and design. She has also been a Visiting Artist at schools and universities from Maine to Virginia. Sax was granted Artist Residencies at The MacDowell Colony for the Arts in Peterborough, NH in 1999 and 2001, and at Weir Farm in Wilton, CT in 2003. She won the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts Visual Art Fellowship in Sweet Briar, VA four times from 2002-2006. She has curated projects for Portland, ME-based institutions including Whitney Art Works and Space Gallery. She currently serves on the board of Speedwell Projects in Portland, ME. Alex Sax lives and works in Yarmouth, ME.

Butterfly Garden
Located in Fairfield, CT
Represented by George Billlis Gallery. The bold flowers and repeating geometric patterns in this series of paintings are lushly modeled in oil paint, and are coupled with the use of inlaid wood. Surrounding the colorful and whimsical bouquets and garlands is a border of complimentary colors rife with kaleidoscopic floral images to further entice the eye. Influences of Persian miniatures and French Baroque are prevalent, as well as traditional floral painting which was used to document nature’s beauty. The artist states, “By using subject matter that is historically decorative and painterly, I seek to explore the medium’s more ethereal content.” The paintings become visually intense and hallucinatory as different varieties of flowers and leaves dance and intertwine in the geometry of the surrounding patterns.
Traditionally mysticism was effectively communicated in painting through an assortment of lyrical, painterly indulgences, creating a supernatural, as well as an escapist experience. Matt Jacobs...

Michael Tole is a figurative painter currently living in Tempe, AZ with his wife and daughters. A Texas native, most of his 20 year long career was spent in Dallas. After relocating to Tempe, his work experienced a significant shift from photo-based paintings of retail interiors to fantastical figurative inventions based on pop culture imagery he has encountered via his two daughters’ taste in music videos, and his proximity to Southern California and it’s particular brand of Disney-esque hedonism. Mr. Tole’s career includes shows in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, and Miami. His work has been reviewed in Art Forum International...

The formality, ornamental qualities and boldness of botanical art strongly influence Bardon's art. It is easy to see her inspiration in the patterns, line and simplicity of form found in Asian art. Some prints also include gold leaf,
recalling the extensive use of gold on Japanese folding screens, and in early Renaissance painting...
