About the Item

One of Rosell's most popular subjects, he is known for his little girl and animal figures. In this good-sized painting, the little girl figure is particularly charming, as she is nursing her pet dog. She washes the dog’s face with a white hankie while her pet leans on her gratefully. Quite expressive and characterful, the dog portraiture is particularly fine. Precious scene by British artist Alexander Rosell (1859-1922), who is known for figurative and animal subjects as well as interior scenes. The little girl genre paintings with a pet dog are his most popular, selling well above his other subjects at Bonhams and Christie’s. In this one the girl has gone outside at night to take care of her beloved pet, with tears in her eyes. Her pet leans in, trusting, while she tenderly dabs a wound. Charming fine oil painting! Presented in period decorative gilt frame of a good large size, 35” by 27” with the frame and canvas sight is 29” by 21”. The painting is in very good overall condition. The frame is quite ornate but has losses with touched up areas, and wear consistent with age. Still, it is a beautiful period frame. This painting was purchased in the UK and imported to US by Saltire Gallerie.
