About

Alfred Glendening Jnr British, (1861-1907) The Trysting Place Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1892, indistinctly signed & inscribed verso Image size: 27.5 inches x 17.5 inches Size including frame: 34.5 inches x 24.5 inches Alfred Illman Glendening was born on 8 February, 1861 at Park Row, Greenwich, London the son of the famous artist Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) and his wife Sophia (née Illman). He was taught by his father who influenced his work and painted in both oil and watercolour. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1881 from 161 Bird in Bush Road, Camberwell, the same address as his father and continued to exhibit there regularly throughout his life. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1882. After he had begun to establish himself as an artist, he married Ruth Fryett on 3 July 1888. Together they had 2 children and lived at Sumatra Road, Hampstead. The couple divorced in 1897 and Glendening then married Daisy Wood. They lived in Stanley Road, Southend where Glendening spent the rest of his life. As well as being an artist he also worked as a scenery painter for the London Music Halls and theatre productions which were widely acclaimed in the press. In 1898, one of his paintings entitled ‘Haymaking’ which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year, was purchased by the Chantry Bequest for the nation. Glendening died on 6 Jan 1907 in Essex. His paintings are represented in a number of public collections including the Aberdeen Art Gallery and the Russell-Cotes Museum. Many of his works are genre scenes featuring women in picturesque landscapes, such as this fine example. Here we see a young woman in a meadow leaning on a gatepost where she waits for her beloved to arrive. She appears to have arrived a little early, having had time to gather flowers for her corsage and take off her straw bonnet. However, from the look on her face she is happy to spend a few moments in contemplation as she waits. At the time of this painting in 1892, Glendening was living in Hampstead which could well have been the location of the scene. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having just been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art
