About the Item

In the tradition of Modigliani, Maurer's depictions of women are expressive and lively. America had very few modernists who painted in this manner but Maurer is famous for exactly this type of work. With the red background and vibrant green blouse, the young woman is particularly piquing as she is looking away from the viewer. The face is done in a slightly elongated form, similar to Modigliani's approach and in rich warm hues. In a room, this creates for a striking and quirky presence. Maurer’s paint handling and free approach to his subjects forecast the work of a whole generation of Abstract Expressionists, including Hans Hoffman and many of his students, who like Maurer, depicted subjects with complete and total freedom. An Ideal Head was executed during Maurer's latter period, when he made regular painting excursions in the Hudson River Valley region of Marlboro, a hamlet in the small town of Marlborough. He rendered many of his paintings from the 1920s in bravura fashion, allowing color and form to dissolve into abstract passages and patterns. Provenance: Salander O’Reilly Galleries, Mark Borghi Fine Art then to private Collection, Armonk, New York. The artwork itself measures 18 x 13 inside the frame.

Abstract of Woman with Flag
By Ralph Eugene Della-Volpe
Located in Greenwich, CT
A unique and uplifting Della-Volpe of a woman with abstracted elements of a flag that speaks of pride in America. Della-Volpe himself had been in the war and when he came home he was part of the New York abstract-expressionist movement. He moved away from this and felt that color and subject matter were his interests within abstraction. He did a series called "The Flagmaker" and while this work is slightly different than those, it still explores the theme of symbols that represent countries and its citizens. This is a large work and he has wonderfully incorporated elements of stars and the red, white and blue colors. There is also an "X" but this is a spatial element of design and he was also interested at this time in putting in 'pop-art" type references to culture as well. A great painting for a living room or family room or entryway. The canvas measures 50.25 x 48 inches within the frame. IT is in a wonderful, custom designed 22 karat silvered float frame. It is signed by the artist in the upper left. And the provenance is acquired directly from the artist. Woman with Flag...

Woman with a Guitar, Cubism
By Simka Simkhovitch
Located in Greenwich, CT
A period work by a Russian artist working in a Cubist approach. The canvas is 24 1/4 x 22 1/4 inches and the above dimension is the framed size. The frame is an older frame, with a flat gold/brown finish. In Woman with Guitar, Simkhovitch plays on his his early fascination with Cubism and Constructivism (and his background in illustration) expressing and compressing with planes and color the spatiality of a domestic scene. Considered a master draftsman and an adherent of certain classicism, Simkhovitch’s compositions are often built up in a complicated but well-managed counterpoint, at heart, he is a romanticist preferring the dreamy colors of a Russian fairy tale.
