About the Item

The art market is rapidly reappraising and reevaluating the contributions of women painters. Much of the emphasis has been on post-war artists such as the abstract expressionist painters such as Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner and others. Mary Cassatt is well-known, but there are a number of pre-war and earlier female painters whose careers deserve similar reappraisal. These include Theresa Bernstein, Marjorie Ryerson, Martha Walter and others still to be found. The list also includes Alice Schille. Born in Ohio, she was known especially for her watercolors and for her paintings that traversedtten a path from impressionism to post-impressionism to expressionism. One critic writes: "Her work is distinguished by a crisply cadenced lyricism, a sure sense of place and a keen sensitivity to human form and condition." Her work garnered important critical attention and praise during the early decades of the twentieth century. Schille began her studies with William Merritt Chase and was close friends with Martha Walter. However, in 1902, she traveled abroad for the first of what would be many visits and sojourns across Europe. These experiences would shape her art. During this time she exhibited frequently and garnered critical acclaim. For example, she exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery Biennials along with Chase, William Bellows, Mary Cassatt, Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Eakins, Robert Henri, Edmund Tarbell and Frederick Frieseke, among others. She would continue to exhibit regularly during her career. Her favorite themes were women and children and families. As she passed into expressionism, her palette grew brighter and she painted towns, landscapes and large groupings. She had her first one-woman show in 1911. The Columbus Museum of Art will mount a retrospective of her work in June 2019. Her work can be found in the High Museum of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts (SF) and others, This work will appear in the catalogue raisonne of the artist's work and is accompanied by a COA from Keny Galleries, estate administrator.
