About the Item
An original contemporary oil painting by Amanda Besl from her most recent body of work created in 2017.
Throughout her career, Amanda Besl has focused primarily on the inner worlds of adolescent girls, turning her attention first to documentary-style portraits of contemporary teenagers and more recently to still lifes informed by Greek mythology, Rococo painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and the Victorian-era preoccupation with women’s hair. In Besl's words:
Through my paintings I explore still life as a psychological constructed environment eluding to the pre-Revolutionary French court whose allegories, fairytales of inevitable adult situations, are relegated to childhood niceties. I am particularly influenced by the works of Fragonard and the criticism he once received that his paintings contained “too much verdure.” My environments tempt you to drown. Braids become kudzu. These are visual retellings of myth and hearsay. These are the dreams of the Dickensian Miss Havisham.
Besl is a painter and arts educator who lives and works in Buffalo. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts from SUNY Oswego (1998) and an MFA in Painting from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan (2001). Besl’s oil paintings, often relatively small, feature rich color and textures. Her work has been shown widely throughout Western New York and New York City, and in Belgium (Aeroplastics), France, Holland, and Russia. She has taught at Nichols School and SUNY Fredonia.
