The muralists Louis P. Szántó and Andrew B. Karoly were based in New York, however, during the 1950s and early ‘60s they worked extensively in Cleveland, painting more than 30 murals for area businesses. They painted murals for at least a dozen bank branches for their biggest Cleveland client, the Society for Savings.
Andrew B. Karoly was born in Veranno, Hungary and studied art in Budapest before the outbreak of World War One. After the War ended in 1918 he began to produce paintings and etchings of scenes in Italy, Germany and particularly, France. Before coming to the United States, he studied at the University of Art and Architecture in Budapest and at the Art Academy in Munich and traveled through Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Belgium, and Holland, gathering material for his paintings and etchings.
It is believed Karoly came to live in New York around 1920 and worked during the years of the Great Depression (1930-1939). During the 1930s, Karoly worked art projects commissioned by W.P.A (Works Progress Administration), including several large, public murals. He produced murals for the 1933 Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago and for Bellevue Hospital in New York. At this time he often collaborated with Hungarian/American painter and etcher, Louis Szanto. Today the etchings and paintings of Andrew B. Karoly are included in many American collections, including the San Jose Museum of Art, Delaware Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, Syracuse University Art Museum, The Jewish Museum, Wichita Art Museum, and the Georgetown University Library Art Collection.
A Hungarian born painter and etcher of figure studies, landscape and marine views, Louis Szántó studied art in both Vienna and Budapest before the outbreak of World War One. He served with the Austrian Army from 1914 to 1918.
After the war Louis Szántó developed an international reputation for both his paintings and etchings. He worked and traveled throughout the Baltic States, Italy, France and Holland and exhibited his art in many major centers, including New York and Chicago. In the early years of the Great Depression (c. 1930), Szántó moved to the United States where he worked on art projects commissioned by the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). During the 1930's he created many American views and often worked in collaboration with the artist, Andrew Karoly. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics. His works are included in the National Portrait Gallery, owned by the Iowa State Historical Museum.

Born in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1922, Robert Brooks embarked on his art career by winning modeling clay as a reward for good attendance at primary school. He became known for embellishing the margins of his school books with sketches of his friends and maybe teachers. He operated his own sign making business as a teenager, which supplied little money but lots of experience. Brooks also entered every poster and drawing competition in sight. Saturday morning classes at the Swain School of Design provided him with sound instructions in the principles of art, and as a high school senior in 1941, Brooks was awarded a scholarship to Boston's Vesper George School of art in a annual state-wide competition. During this year in Boston, he specialized in design, color and the theater arts and discovered "watercolor" as his favorite medium. At the end of his year Brooks was awarded a scholarship to continue by the Vesper George School but returned to New Bedford before the second year was out in order to work in the design department of a large textile printing concern.
He was called to serve his country and after basic training, casual detachments and port of embarkation, he made his own private beachhead on New Caledonia in 1943, where he served as staff artist for The South Pacific Daily News. Brooks painted sketches and watercolors of the local scene during his daytime off-duty hours and won fast acclaim for his crisp, clean paintings...

Guy Pene du Bois WPA American Modernism Realism NYC Scene Oil Lawyers in Court
By Guy Pène Du Bois
Located in New York, NY
Guy Pene du Bois' "Two Figures in Courtroom" is a WPA era American scene oil painting created in a realistic style. Modernism at its best The work is framed by Heydenryk.
Pène du Bois descended from French immigrants who settled in Louisiana in 1738 and was raised in a Creole household. He was born in 1884 in Brooklyn, NY and first studied with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and later continued his training with Robert Henri. Pène du Bois was greatly impressed with Henri's credo that "real life" was subject matter for art and throughout his life a realist philosophy informed his art as well as his parallel career, art criticism. In 1905, Pène du Bois made his first visit to Paris where he painted scenes of fashionable people in cafes rendered in the dark tonalities and impasto associated with the Ashcan School. By 1920, he had achieved his mature style, which was characterized by stylized, rounded, almost sculptural figures painted with invisible brushstrokes. The subjects of his paintings were often members of society whom he gently satirized.
In 1924, Pène du Bois and his wife, Floy, left for France where they would remain until 1930. Returning to America showcases pictures the artist produced after this very productive period abroad. After five years of living in France, Pène du Bois was able to observe American life with fresh eyes. His work becomes more psychologically intense and less satirical. In Girl at Table a slender, blond is shown gazing at a small statue that she holds at arm's distance. The meaning is elusive, but a powerful sense of longing is evoked. Similarly, paintings such as Dramatic Moment and Jane are taut with unresolved dialogue. Both pictures depict mysterious interiors in which a lone woman anxiously awaits the denouement of a suspenseful scene. Other pictures, for example, Chess Tables, Washington Square and Bar, New Orleans, recall Pene du Bois's Ashcan origins in their depiction of urban entertainment.
During this period, landscape becomes an important subject for Pène du Bois. Girl Sketching...
