About the Item
This oil painting is part of the artist's ongoing exploration of imagery that draws upon the private and collective memories of expatriates from Soviet Russia. Formally, the work attempts to marry several types of visual languages in a tug between different ways of seeing: from the flattened and abstracted treatment of the boy to the left pants to the more volumetric and spacially accurate figure with the orange sweater to the right, and the almost noodle-like, elongated central figure - it attempts to play with distance from the viewer by employing these varied approaches of representation. Likewise, the work employs different layers of abstraction when it comes to the depiction of the boys' faces. The boy in orange is painted in a faithful classical, perceptually accurate manner, while the two other faces display a candid indebtedness to the photographic image, with it's blurred effect and unnatural coloration. Meanwhile, the space is utterly made-up and harkens back to a non-descript soviet-style apartment, which could date somewhere vaguely from the 70s onto the 1990s. The work attempts to muse on the notion of memory itself, with its illusory and incomplete qualities.
