About the Item
From the Apathy Series, Andrew Smenos' recent body of work, comes "THIS WON'T HELP" – a fire extinguisher melting in the heat of disaster... At 30x20", this accurately detailed oil on canvas painting is a must for optimists and pessimists alike. It's an annoying disaster.
From a recent Press Release: "There’s a giddy, liberated pleasure looking at Andrew Smenos’ elegant ocean liner sinking in front of you, all that grace and purpose, sinking not sinking, gone but not going, happy to not be on THAT boat. The life-jackets in their great solidity are saving no one. The buildings are on fire, sadly one room at a time. The fire extinguishers and traffic pylons are melting down. Of course we look! It’s tragic and hilarious, alarming and numbing – and here’s Andrew Smenos, with gentle time-worn materials and craft, portraying disaster and holding out hope."
From Andrew Smenos – "We want what we want despite the consequences. The cognitive dissonance experienced in the world today is powerful and destructive. The Apathy Series asks why we seem to have an imbalance of apathy and obsession. The lack of common sense to understand cause and effect. The ignorance to neglect solutions."
"The classical and historical tradition of ceramic sculpture and oil painting speaks to the obsession society has always had for beautiful and relevant objects. Simple on the surface, the works focus on a single, poignant image brought to life by centuries-old sculpture and painting technique. The naive style and the irreverent, sardonic humor is intended to align itself with our less sophisticated and apathetic attributes."
Andrew Smenos' paintings and ceramic sculptures were recently shown at Fresh Paint, a group show at Art of Our Century Gallery in Greenwich Village, New York City, from February 27 to March 22, 2020.
Andrew Smenos received his BFA from The Ringling College of Art and Design. His work is held in private and public collections nationally and has been featured in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Daily Beast and ArtInfo. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

"Strengths and Weaknesses", acrylic, charcoal, art history, abstract, portrait
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is a portrait exploring several elements and strategies that fascinate the artist – notably the performance anxiety induced by simply being an artist, staring down the freight train of art history as it hurtles toward you every time you pick up a brush. Luck? Talent? Maybe. There are signposts and guides in this painting, of course (Cubism! Surrealism! Brancusi! Guston!), but they can clobber you too if you're not careful. Even the phrase "strengths and weaknesses" smacks of compromises and rationalization – deadly to an artist looking to construct their own integral world.
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide. It was included in the artist's solo show "Comedy Cellar" at Freight + Volume Gallery, New York City in July 2018. (See last photograph for an installation view.)
From Daniel Gerwin – "Schenck’s color is vibrant, wild, saturated to the point of overheating, and altogether brilliant in the balancing of hues, temperatures, shapes, and color quantities. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." (Essay: The Anxiety and the Ecstasy)

"Endless Summer", acrylic, canvas, artist tools, toys, paintbrush, tube, beach
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Endless Summer" is a well-known artwork among Peter Schenck's many remarkable paintings, and addresses subject matter that continues to engage the artist – the tools of painting and art making, including brushes, tubes of paint and palette knife are arranged in a child-like tableau alongside brightly colored and eroticized inflatables of the hand, the breast, the dollop of paint... And all of it reminiscent of toys on a beach under blue skies where anything should be possible.
From Peter Schenck: "Endless Summer mixes up the time-honored tradition of the still life with my feelings on an artist's attachment to their tools – brush, palette, paint – an attachment at times bordering on erotic, at times feeling awkward and all-thumbs. I was also taking on Tom Wesselmann's concentrated still lives of the 60s and 70s, banal and erotic all at once."
"Endless Summer" is an acrylic paint on canvas measuring 30" tall by 25" wide. It was included in the group show "Sitting Still" at Bravin Lee Programs Gallery, New York City in October 2017, and showed alongside work by Fairfield Porter, Thomas Nozkowski, Janet Fish, Robert DeNiro Sr...

"Everyone's Favorite Game, " Oil painting
By Kelly Birkenruth
Located in Denver, CO
Kelly Birkenruth's oil painting "Everyone's Favorite Game" depicts a rock, paper, and scissors.
About the artist:
Kelly Birkenruth’s captivating paintings are in the style of contemporary realism while staying firmly grounded in the tradition of the Old Masters. She is able to pull the viewer into her paintings by interweaving emotion with a humanistic quality through her supreme handling of light. Through her portraits and still lifes she is able to evoke sensitivity and empathy, which in turn allows her to create images which transcend mere representation to capture the true essence of her subject. Kelly’s arresting compositions, draftsmanship, use of color and observation of detail allow her to create paintings with a timeless quality.
After earning her degree from Pennsylvania State University, Kelly moved to southern California where she began a career as a fashion model. Her agency soon sent her abroad to Paris and Tokyo, where she spent the next several years modeling. When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal.
In the spring of 2019 Kelly...
