About the Item

ÁNGEL MARÍA CORTELLINI Spanish, 1819 - 1887 OFRECIENDO UNA COPA unsigned oil on canvas 13-1/4 x 11 inches (33.5 x 28 cm.) framed: 17-1/4 x 15 (44 x 38 cm.) Ángel María Cortellini. Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz), 27.09.1819 – Madrid, 1887. Painter. Ángel María Cortellini was born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda on September 27, 1819, to an Italian father and a Spanish and Sanlúcar mother. Contrary to family opinion, he decided to dedicate himself to painting and already, at the age of nine, he was enrolled in a drawing academy in his hometown. They soon sent him to Seville, where he was a disciple of Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer. At eighteen he went to northern Italy, where he stayed for at least a year. Returning to Seville, he worked with José Bécquer and enrolled in the Royal Sevillian Academy of the Three Noble Arts. Its beginnings are inserted in the costumbrista school, with a series of canvases with tavern scenes and bullfighters. In 1847 he arrived in Madrid. At Court his style evolved, influenced by the great portrait painters of the century. Like so many other painters of the time, he attended the exhibitions at the Liceo and those at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, in which he presented, above all, portraits. In one of these exhibitions, the King consort, Don Francisco de Asís, commissioned a painting from him. Thereafter, Cortellini worked for the Royal Family and received the title of Honorary Painter of the Royal Chamber. There are several known portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and her husband. At the 1860 National Exhibition of Fine Arts, he presents a portrait of his wife that will earn him a 1st class honorable mention, and at the 1866 exhibition he receives a third medal for the portrait of the famous actress of the time, María Muñoz. In 1871 he presented a canvas with a very significant theme of the moment, the battle of Wad-Ras, which apparently was awarded a Gold Medal. He also painted some religious paintings in which Murillo's mark is evident. The whole of his work can be inscribed in full Romanticism, together with that of Antonio María Esquibel and José Gutiérrez Solana from Seville. The painter died in Madrid in 1887.

Woman with Two Children in Red - Interior Scene in Oil on Canvas Lovely interior scene by notable artist Joseph Tomanek (Cech-American, 1889-1974). A woman sits near a window, holding a small child dressed in bright red in her lap. Another child, somewhat older, stands next to her, looking at the young child. Soft lights spills though the window, illuminating the scene in a warm glow. A plant with red flowers sits on the windowsill, and foliage can be seen outside. He emigrated to America around the turn of the century and arrived in Chicago in 1910 and worked as an interior decorator. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and studied with Antonin Sterba.
