About the Item

Annibale Gatti (Forlì 1827 - Florence 1909), attr. Allegorical Scene Oil on paper applied to board, 25 x 30 cm - with frame 36 x 42 The allegorical work, by analysis and stylistic comparison, is definitely attributable to the hand of Annibale Gatti (1827-1909). A pupil of Giuseppe Bezzuoli, he was one of the major painters of the second half of the 19th century in Florence and the most representative of the period of Florence as capital. Part of his production refers to mythological and allegorical scenes: the paper in question is a preparatory sketch belonging to the present cycle, a representative example of Romantic-Purist painting of the time. A female figure with a turreted crown on her head, identifiable with the Greek goddess Tiche, sits enthroned accompanied by a Love at her side holding the torch of sacred fire. At the feet is a cornucopia from which weapons emerge. Around them, five female figures lay laurel wreaths on the base of the throne. The women could represent the five continents in the act of entrusting their identity and protection to the goddess. In the background, a blue sky is sketched, while other figures act in the background. Annibale Gatti's fortune is attested by the commissions from the Florentine bourgeoisie and aristocracy of the time, as well as the frescoes in the royal apartments of Villa Meridiana in Palazzo Pitti, in 1861, intended as the residence of King Victor Emmanuel II. To confirm the notoriety achieved by the painter, it is enough to consider that news of one of his works was given in the Nation of June 23, 1872, where it was reported that the painter was "finishing Paisiello who is staging before Catherine II of Russia his opera La Serva Padrona." The attribution is further supported by a pencil inscription on the back. The item is in good condition
