Description: This 1995 watercolor by Tony Herbert depicts the expansive salt marshes of Walberswick, one of Suffolk’s most atmospheric and historically significant coastal villages. Broad, open skies stretch above a tidal creek that winds through grassy wetland and sandy banks, with two of Walberswick’s iconic black fishermen’s huts and red-roofed cottages anchoring the left side of the composition.
The scene is rendered in Herbert’s characteristically confident and economical brushwork, using wet-in-wet techniques and dry-brush accents to evoke the layered textures of reedy marshland, soft earth and cloud-streaked sky.
