Augustus Vincent Tack
The Call Home

c. 1897-1898

$55,000

About

An example of American Impressioinism at its best, exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1898. The straw hat the boy is wearing ties the painting to Thomas Sully's 1820 masterpiece "The Torn Hat." Born in 1870, he began his studies with John Twachtman, John LaFarge and H. Siddons Mowbray. He studied in Paris for a time and is known to have visited Monet in Giverny. Tack considered himself a "symbolist" painter and was much influenced by Christian theology and Eastern religion. Between the wars, he produced a number of nearly-abstract works that are considered to have influenced the later work of Clyfford Still and the Washington Color School painters. He was a particular favorite of Duncan Phillips and there are some 40 of his works in the Phillips Collection.
