About the Item
Initialed upper right 'A.B.' for Axel Bentzen (Danish, 1893-1952) painted circa 1925.
Axel Bentzen studied art as a child and, by the age of 14, was copying Old Master paintings at Copenhagen's National Museum of Art. He traveled to Italy in 1919 and, from 1923-1939, spent every second year there or in Paris, painting and furthering his understanding of the principles of Modernism. Bentzen was the recipient of numerous scholarships including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone scholarship which he was awarded twice (1925, 1927) and the Copenhagen Akademie scholarship which he received three times (1927, 1929, 1931). He exhibited internationally with success including, from 1922, at the Charlottenborg as well as at prominent salons in Paris, Berlin, Venice, Budapest, Riga and Belgrade. The artist is listed in all relevant art reference works including both Benezit's Dictionary of Artists and Thieme-Becker's Kunstlexikon (Vollmer Supplement). Axel Bentzen
Axel Bentzen studied painting from an early age and, at the age of 14, was copying Old Master paintings at Copenhagen's Statens Museum for Kunst. He traveled to Italy in 1919 and, from 1923–29, spent every second year there. He also spent time in Paris, painting and furthering his studies of Modernism. He was the recipient of numerous artist scholarships that supported his studies and travels, including the prestigious Hielmstierne-Rosencrone scholarship twice (1925, 1927) and the Copenhagen Akademie scholarship three times (1927, 1929, 1931) among others. He was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and exhibited internationally, with success including at the Charlottenburg from 1922 and in Paris, Berlin, Venice, Belgrade and Budapest. He is listed in both the Benezit Dictionary of Artists and Thieme-Becker.

Dick Beer was born in London in 1893. His father, John Beer (1853-1906), was a Swedish painter from Stockholm who had a career mainly as a watercolour painter with motifs of horses from racetracks and fox hunts from the countryside.
Barely fifteen years old, Dick Beer became an orphan and came to Sweden in 1907. Already in 1908-1909, he started at Althin's painting school in Stockholm. And later, at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1910-1912. His teachers were, among others, Gustaf Cederström, Oscar Björk and Alfred Bergström...
