About the Item
Oil on Board.
The work is accompanied by expert opinion by Professor Mauro Minardi, who attributes the painting to the production of Bartolomeo Neroni, known as Riccio, an artist active in Siena in the 16th century, through a documented comparison of the pictorial elements of that work with others by the same author.
The painting proposes a subject that was widely used in the 'artistic environment of Siena in the 16th century, namely, a Madonna and Child with Saints.
In this tondo, Mary is depicted in a half-length pose while holding the baby Jesus, standing before her on a tabletop: the hands of mother and child intertwine in a gesture of tenderness.
On either side of them, in the background, are two figures of saints, who are among those most venerated in Siena: on the right is St. Catherine, recognizable by her black monk's habit with a white veil and wimple and holding the traditional lily, a symbol of purity; on the left appears a lesser-known saint, St. Ansanus, a young knight who lived in the third century in Siena, then a Roman colony, where he preached Christianity and received martyrdom.
The young saint is depicted holding a banner pole with one hand and a spherical object with the other, which according to the its iconography should depict a heart.
The work thus falls within the devotional painting that was widespread in the 16th century and to which the Riccio with his workshop devoted extensive efforts, given the extensive number of specimens similar to this one that have survived and attributed to him thanks in part to fortunate documentation for some of them.
The images in the painting are inscribed in a frame embossed in the same board and gilded.
At the back, the board appears to be reinforced by parquetry. A few color falls present.

View AllPenitent Magdalene and St. John the Baptist, oil on slate, early 17th century
Located in Milan, IT
The figure of the Magdalene emerges from the
darkness, leaning to follow the curve of the stone
support; it is depicted vaulted with an interrogative
air towards the dark, as if in an attitude of listening,
the left hand raised and the other leaning on the
"memento mori" very shortened. In front of her a
scourge and the jar of ointment.
Painted en pendant, Saint John the Baptist is depicted
as a young man, with a lamb at his feet, in his hand
the processional cross with the banner "exception
agnus dei", while with his right hand he draws from
the source of water, recalling the episode that will see
Jesus Christ baptized.
In both paintings the figures stand out in a strong and
incisive way thanks to the black that characterizes the
slate plate on which they are depicted.
Historical-critical analysis:
We are faced with two examples of oil painting on
stone. The beginnings of this particular technique are
to be placed in the first half of the sixteenth century:
after some fifteenth-century experiments it is with
Sebastiano del Piombo that the genre takes hold in
the sixteenth century. There were different types of
support used, also linked to their availability:
amethyst, marble in various colors, alabaster and
blackboard. The reasons underlying this technical
choice refer to Renaissance artistic theories: it is no
coincidence that the painter who most often
experimented with oil painting on marble...
