Unlike traditional painted portraits, this work is carved into the surface, allowing light and shadow to define form. The result is an image that feels sculpted out of energy itself, a fitting homage to Hendrix, whose music was all about breaking boundaries and pushing sound into new dimensions. The carving technique is essential to the painting’s power. Rather than relying on smooth layers of pigment, the artist incises the surface, creating sharp, dynamic strokes that resemble scratches or cuts of light. Each line seems to vibrate, echoing the strings of a guitar or the bursts of distortion that Hendrix made famous. This physical act of cutting into the surface parallels the rawness of Hendrix’s own artistry: bold, unrefined, yet full of innovation and intensity. Hendrix’s face emerges from the darkness through these radiant cuts, bathed in tones of blue, yellow, and soft violet. The blues lend coolness and introspection, yellow injects warmth and vitality, and violet adds an otherworldly, spiritual resonance. Against the black background, these colors glow, transforming Hendrix into a figure who is at once human and mythic. His features are not softened but heightened by contrast, deep shadows offset by bursts of illumination. The eyes, half-shrouded, evoke a state of focus and immersion, as though Hendrix is caught mid-performance, absorbed in sound that the viewer can almost hear. The aura radiating around his head and shoulders becomes central to the work’s visual rhythm. Lines explode outward, like an energy field or halo, blurring the line between the musician and the cosmos. This radiance suggests not only his physical presence on stage but the aura of influence he carried, the way his music reverberated through cultural and artistic landscapes. It is both personal and universal: Hendrix as man, and Hendrix as legend. There is also a tactile, almost visceral quality to the carved marks. The grooves catch light differently depending on angle and depth, making the portrait appear to shimmer and move as one shifts perspective. This reinforces the sense of music and movement, turning the static image into something alive. Just as Hendrix manipulated feedback and distortion into new forms of musical expression, the artist manipulates carved texture and color into a visual rhythm that transcends traditional portraiture. Symbolically, the carving can be read as an act of engraving memory into surface, echoing the way Hendrix left a lasting imprint on music and culture. The cuts in the material feel permanent, irreversible, just as his influence cannot be erased. The work thus captures both the fragility of human existence, its reliance on contrast, light, and shadow, and the permanence of legacy, etched indelibly into cultural consciousness. In many ways, the portrait is not simply about Hendrix’s likeness but about channeling his spirit. The explosive strokes, the glowing colors, the carved textures, all speak to improvisation, freedom, and transcendence. It is a work that vibrates with sound even in silence, turning the visual field into a kind of synesthetic experience where one can almost hear the guitar’s wail and feel the pulse of the music. By carving Hendrix’s image into the surface, the artist pays homage not only to his physical presence but also to his role as a force of energy and transformation. It is a portrait that bridges music and art, body and aura, man and myth. Through its raw technique and radiant effect, the painting celebrates Hendrix as both an icon of individuality and a timeless symbol of artistic innovation. ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Discover my work on Channel 4 UK in the TV Show "Huges Home" with Hugh Dennis _ Episode 4 ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ Bazévian Delacapucinière is a French artist whose works have appeared in numerous exhibitions and publications in Europe, America and Asia. My work focuses on oxidized images from the collective memory of the 20th century. According to Aristotle, from memory to reminiscence, it is necessary to reactivate images through the imagination to know their sensitive power. Consequently, the gaze (of portraits) becomes power, texture becomes light. Finally, this transposition of images becomes my individual memory.
