Bea Sarrias
CONTEMPORARY Architecture Spanish Artist Bea Sarrias NATO HQ 2024

2018

About the Item

In March 2019, Bea Sarrias embarked on a remarkable endeavor at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, marking the beginning of a transformative artistic journey. Entitled "INSIDE," this ambitious project sought to encapsulate the essence of the Alliance's new headquarters through a monumental painting spanning over six square meters. Sarrias's vision transcended mere architectural representation; instead, she aimed to craft a portrait imbued with the rich history and vitality of the building and its inhabitants. "I do not just paint buildings, but instead I create a portrait, reflecting the history of the building and that of the people that work and live in it," she articulated during discussions with Spanish media. For Sarrias, architecture served as a conduit for illuminating the interplay of light and space, evoking a sense of resonance and depth within her work. The inauguration of the project was met with enthusiasm and admiration from NATO officials and esteemed guests. Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller commended Sarrias's "unique style," anticipating the emergence of the Agora – the central focal point of the headquarters – as the defining jewel of the canvas. Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Carmen Romero underscored the significance of showcasing the multifaceted facets of NATO, embracing the softer, more nuanced dimensions of the organization's identity. Spanish Ambassador Miguel Fernández-Palacios lauded Sarrias as an "outstanding young artist" poised to capture the essence of NATO, while Manuel Cirauqui, curator of the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, lent his presence to the project's launch, affirming its cultural and artistic significance. The "INSIDE" project epitomizes the NATO Arts Programme's commitment to fostering artistic dialogue and expression within the Alliance. Established in 2016, this initiative has seen the realization of various artistic endeavors, from commemorative pieces like the Berlin Wall and 9/11 Memorials to innovative performance art and interactive media installations. As we commemorate the fifth anniversary of Sarrias's monumental contribution to NATO Headquarters, we are thrilled to announce a special occasion. For the first time, three of the artworks created for the presentation to the organization's highest leaders will be made available for sale. These pieces, infused with Sarrias's distinctive vision and craftsmanship, offer a rare opportunity to own a piece of history. The artist, Bea Sarrias, has developed much of her work in Barcelona, where she studied Fine Arts and soon became interested in architecture and the portrayal of iconic spaces. Her work, based on works by important Spanish and international architects, has received recognition, highlighting her virtuoso handling of light and shadows. Her most recent projects include the large-scale portrait she painted live in 2019 at NATO headquarters in Brussels and an action painting at Eurojust headquarters in 2023 invited by the Spanish government to celebrate the Spanish Presidency in the European Union. Shortly thereafter, she undertook an artist residency at Mana Contemporary in New York, where she worked on the imprint that architect Josep Lluís Sert had left in the city. Subsequently, she has held monographic exhibitions on "La Ricarda" by Bonet Castellana"and on the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona. She has carried out several solo exhibitions and some artistic actions in Barcelona, Madrid, New York, Brussels, Amsterdam, Malmö and Oslo. She is currently working on new artistic actions at an international level and is preparing a new stay at the University of La Cambre in Brussels to work on modern European architecture. Her work is in different collections such as Mies van der Rohe Foundation, Eileen Kaminsky Foundation and Open Earth Foundation.
