Coffee Break, Saturday Evening Post cover

1957

About the Item

Medium: Gouache on Board Signature: Signed Lower Left Sight Size 29.00" x 26.00;" Framed 38.50" x 35.00" Framed under glass. Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, March 9, 1957 The Post described, “Here we study a slight witch on that beneficent, that inspiring, that life preserving institution, the coffee break. One day Ben Prins had a shower of sparks inside his head, then a display of skyrockets and pinwheels, and when that ended he had the idea for this cover. However, fearing his theme incredible, Prins asked a coffee-truck driver (not that one there) if he’d ever heard of a crane acting like a waitress, and the man said heck, it had not only happened to him, but when his truck had got stuck in a mud flat, Miss Crane had picked up the whole shebang. So Prins wondered if he himself had thought up the cover or had a lot of other guys? While wondering, he painted it. Location of his land and waterscape: on the Connecticut Turnpike-to-be; title: Coffee Break at the Coffer Dam.” (The Saturday Evening Post, March 9, 1957, p. 3)
