Two Women oil on canvas 91.5 x 71.2 cm 36 x 28 in unsigned Provenance: Nora Meninsky (the artist's widow); The Belgrave Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame); Boundary Gallery, London (stock label attached to the reverse of the frame); Private collection, purchased from the above Exhibitions: The Belgrave Gallery, London, 'Bernard Meninsky 1891-1950', 14th November - 7th December 1990, no.2 Literature: The Belgrave Gallery, London, 'Bernard Meninsky 1891-1950', 1990, illus. on cover Bernard Meninsky was a painter of figures and landscapes in oils, watercolour and gouache. He was born in 1891 in Karotopin, the Ukraine, of Jewish parents; brought to England six weeks later and lived in Liverpool. He attended the Liverpool School of Art, winning various scholarships and the King's Medal; worked in Paris and studied at the Slade School 1912-13. Meninsky worked for Gordon Craig in Florence 1913 and then taught life drawing at the Central School. He exhibited with the N.E.A.C. from 1914, became a member in 1923; and also exhibited with the London Group from 1916 becoming a member in 1919. He was an official War Artist 1914-18 and had his fiirst one-man exhibition at the Goupil Gallery in 1919. Meninsky taught at Westminster School of Art from 1920 and worked in the south of France in 1922 and 1937 and in Spain 1936. He taught at the City of Oxford Art School from 1940-5 and had an Arts Council memorial exhibition from 1951-2 and a retrospective exhibition at the Adams Gallery 1958.
