About the Item
Bing Zhang’s The Beach (Triptych), a large-scale oil on canvas painting presented by Andra Norris Gallery in California, is a striking testament to the artist’s command of realist figurative painting. Spanning an impressive 60 x 120 inches (5 x 10 feet), the work is composed of three individual panels: the two side panels measure 36 inches wide, while the central panel stands at 48 inches. Whether exhibited as a unified whole or as standalone pieces, the triptych invites viewers into a serene yet thought-provoking coastal scene set in Thailand—a place rich with personal significance for the artist.
Rendered in Zhang’s signature style of autobiographical realism, the painting is both idyllic and quietly incisive. At first glance, it appears to be a peaceful depiction of vacationers lounging on a sunlit beach, absorbed in the warmth of the day. But a closer look reveals a subtle tension: nearly every figure is engaged with a mobile phone. These devices—ubiquitous, glowing, ever-present—anchor the work in contemporary life. Zhang explores the paradox of modern connection: the way screens draw people inward, often detaching them from their immediate physical surroundings, even as they offer a lifeline to distant relationships and imagined realities.
Through this carefully observed moment, Zhang reflects not only on her own experiences but also on the collective condition of our time. The beach, traditionally a space for relaxation and interpersonal connection, becomes a stage for quiet disconnection. Yet, the painting doesn’t pass judgment. Rather, it gently holds a mirror up to our world, prompting reflection on presence, absence, and the ways we seek meaning and intimacy in an increasingly digitized existence.
Artist signed, titled, and dated verso, The Beach is a visually arresting and conceptually rich work that lingers in the mind long after viewing—inviting us to reconsider where we are, who we are with, and how we choose to connect.

By Gail Chase-Bien
Located in Burlingame, CA
Gail Chase Bien paints thinly layered oil on linen over extended periods (from months to years) to complete a single work of art. Taking cues from nature’s extraordinary visual offerings — specifically, the play of light as it touches upon water and earth — her nature-inspired works bridge realism and abstraction, and they convey a thin veneer of the of human spirit. Complex, rich, and slow in the making, the paintings, with their serene simplicity, are intended to be viewed and enjoyed over time.

Joy VII - Contemporary Figurative Oil Painting, Beach View, Realism

"Julita Malinowska's paintings belong to those, which once seen - are never forgotten. The open spaces, sometimes cool and bright, at other times heavily saturated with contrasting light, create a landscape in which, like a counterpoint, we come across a figure – sometimes one, perhaps two or more. The synthetic construction of form, clean contours, and strong divisions are elements which at first sight are the defining characteristics of the artist's style. It is impossible to pass one by and remain indifferent to the subdued harmony flooding these spaces which not totally defined. The drawings, however, are somewhat different. Although they contain the same motifs, at times even the same compositions – the value strategems employed by Julita create a sense of foreboding in a world already balancing on the edge. The painterly and graphic form constructed by the artist is itself thought- provoking . The heightened tones, the light which at times goes off the scale and the almost classic contours lead us to look at Malinowska's work through the prism of classicism and the great art theories of the 17th century. Such references are quite rare in the painting of today and beyond – in art. The search for a language allowing the artist to deal with universal issues and fundamental questions in order to understand the sense of not only art, but also life, has not been too popular a phenomenom in art over the last century. The artist has, however, for the last few years quite consciously defined the sphere of her search. It could first be seen in the diploma cycle of paintings, the summary of her years of study. “The role of the painting defined then and the concious selection of formal sources became the starting point for further artistic exploration, which I have been following carefully ever since.”
