LOVING OVERWHELM II - large street abstract painting on canvas

2023

About the Item

Artist: Brett W. Thompson Title: Loving Overwhelm II Size: 48 x 48 inches Medium: Krink and Montana marker, acrylic on stretched canvas Signature: En verso Unique "Loving Overwhelm II" is an animated street abstract painting on canvas, part of Brett W. Thompson's ongoing "Fluidtoons" series. This series encompasses an intuitive expression of cartoon art, spanning drawings and paintings on various surfaces, including paper, canvas, walls, and even the human body. It also extends to hand-drawn animations. Thompson's artistic journey began in childhood when his parents, his mother being a painter and his father an epidemiologist, encouraged his penchant for doodling. This creative outlet soon turned into a fervent passion. In the mid-1990s, Thompson coined the term "Fluidtoons" to describe his distinctive style, characterized by interconnected, cartoony line art. His influences include artists like Keith Haring and a wide spectrum of cartoon genres, from the early "rubber hose" animation to 1990s Nickelodeon classics like "Ren & Stimpy." Notably, comic strip artist Steve Dickenson once praised his work, emphasizing that "filling pages like this is a great way to develop your style." Thompson's approach to creating Fluidtoons art is spontaneous and meditative, allowing him to enter a "flow state" – a psychological concept introduced by Mihály Csíkszentmihályi in 1975. This state describes complete immersion, heightened focus, and intense enjoyment during an activity. For Thompson, drawing Fluidtoons serves as a form of mindfulness practice. While Brett Thompson's artistic journey unfolded, he also pursued traditional animation studies under the tutelage of John R. Dilworth, the creator of "Courage the Cowardly Dog." In parallel, Thompson graduated from college with degrees in computer science and psychology. He initially embarked on a career at Google but eventually decided to dedicate himself entirely to the world of Fluidtoons. His works have graced galleries in New York City, and he has received numerous commissions for murals in and around the city. One of his most recent projects was a commissioned piece for The Atlantic, facilitated by IndieWalls. Thompson currently works and lives in Brooklyn, NY.
