About the Item
A moment in time - the bikini clad women are oblivious to their surroundings - lost in an e-book, sunk into a sandy slumber, placing a towel on a chair, checking her cell phone while roving eyes catch them in their innocence.
From the Artist:
The first time I saw artists working from live models was at an outdoor workshop in Saugutuck Michigan, conducted by the Art Institute of Chicago. I was 14, and it made such an impression on me. Three years later, I entered a figure drawing class at the Institute. Nervous and thrilled. But wait - there is a nude male model on a riser in front of the artists. Should I turn and run? But wait - there are two nuns in the class. I’ll be OK. And so, I stayed and fell in love with figure drawing and to this day, I enjoy painting pictures of people - seminude - at the beach.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
