About the Item

Fading Memories - The passage of time can erase once golden moments. These two young girls, friends, are on a walk in the park, accompanied by their grandfathers. Something catches their attention- perhaps a dog chasing a squirrel - and they pause. It is a pause worth remembering because it is a beautiful day, and there is a slight breeze and the perfume of orange blossoms is in the air. Until. over time. the indelible event becomes faint and neither girl recalls the moment, the walk or the beautiful day. Artist Carole Garland captures the sense of disappearing memory by removing the paint of an almost completed work. Using scraping techniques and painting back into the surface, she reveals the underpainting and recreates the sense of loss. The 12'x12' oil painting on a wood panel is wired for ease of hanging. The natural wood sides may serve as a frame. Carole Garland studied figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago, and painting at Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has studied with fine artists Frank Serrano, Calvin Liang, Jeff Horn, Ron Pekar and Linda Jacobson. Her most recent influence is David Gallup, former vice president of the California Art Club. Garland has shown in venues around Southern California and is in art collections throughout the U.S.

THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS
By Carole Garland
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A friend of Carole Garland’s suggested she might be so enthusiastic about painting figures and groups of people because of her previous isolation during Covid. In fact, her one wish when it was over was to sit at a sidewalk café anywhere and people watch. But in this work, there is something more. “Thoughts and Prayers” is a reaction to attending a Bingo fundraiser for a Recovery House. Everyone was enjoying themselves at various tables. It was a benign event, except for the specter of mass shootings in innocent, unsuspecting gatherings like this. In the painting, Garland attempts to convey her feelings of dread at an otherwise boisterous occasion. It was happening everywhere, anywhere, all the time. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied art at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...

Remembering, Original Painting

Artist Comments
A male and female form face forward in an abstract landscape, the sunset glows brilliantly behind them. The figures are together, but there is a space between them. "The figures are fragments of faded, bittersweet memory - fondness and nostalgia," explains Gena. "The color schemes are a mixture of pastels and bold primaries - found in childhood - against a dark horizon and foreground. Contrasting light rests on the shoulders and edges of the figures, evoking an ambiguous, even mysterious mood." Part of Gena's ongoing Illumination series, exploring mood and emotion through abstract portraits. She begins each piece with a dark background, adding fast, autonomous and broad marks. As the work progresses, she reveals and wipes away a history of her mark-making, selectively deciding what imagery to keep and what to discard. She continues the process until recognizable imagery and figures materialize. Her reference material for these portraits is mostly color schemes observed in nature or from memory.
