About the Item
A Mother and her Children. A mother clutches her toddler to her breast and grabs her young son as they make for the shoreline to escape the churning Pacific Ocean waters. Are they running playfully or are they afraid of the next big wave. It is left for the viewer to decide.
Artist Carole Garland paints the turbulent waters with an impressionist's flair, expressing the beautiful harmonies of the ocean's waters in subtle shades of lavender and turquoise teal and mixes of olive green and phthalo blue. And white, of course. At the same time, she captures the flowing movement of the breaking waves and the waters lapping at the shoreline. Likewise, the figures are painted, not with cool academic precision, but with an eye to reveling in the beauty of bodies in motion.
This 16"x12" oil painting on a wood panel has natural wood sides which serve as a frame. The back is wired for easy hanging.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
