About the Item

A perfect example of Charles Baxter's work. Two beautiful ladies , one holding a flower, dressed in their best finery. Despite being unsigned, the painting has full provenance having being fully catalogued by Christies as shown by their stamp on the stretcher. It is a wonderful example of Victorian genre and figurative oil painting and would be perfect for any connoisseur and collector of this style of art or of Charles Baxter. It is in its original gold leaf frame. Charles BAXTER Lived 1809 – 1879 His speciality was figures and heads. He started his career as a bookbinder and miniature painter. He became a painter of fancy portraits and charming pretty girls in the ‘Keepsake’ tradition. His subjects also included poetic and rustic scenes. He was elected a Member of the Society of British Artists in 1842 Exhibited 1834 - 1879 Exhibited at:-Royal Academy x 45 British Institution x 3 Royal Society of British Artists x 154
