Apparition (Dogwoods) displays a startled horse on his back legs as his handler holds onto the lead rope. The horse and handler, painted in full color, are set in the foreground in front of a mansion. The monochromatic grayscale of the background and mansion recede in the composition as the bright pink dogwood hang across the top of the painting,
creating a dreamlike backdrop inspired by an old Hollywood movie set. Charles Keiger explores the tension between the dreamy, nostalgic backdrop and modern technicolor foreground.

Atlanta-based artist Charles Keiger is best known for his southern gothic and magical realism oil paintings. He constructs each painting with “real-world” elements—trees, flowers, animals, people, etc.—presented in a surreal atmosphere. “It’s ok to smile when you look at my paintings,” says Keiger, “and it’s not necessary to ‘figure it out.’” Through oil and mixed media on wood and canvas, Keiger explores how gesture, design, color, and subtle details can reveal the tremendous depth of human emotion. His goal is to connect with the viewer through universal experience and understanding. Keiger’s work has been featured in multiple one-man and group shows throughout the southeast and in New York City. His work is also included in 200 various private and corporate collections including those of MGM Grand Las Vegas, Joel Katz, and Halle Berry.
