About the Item
Late 20th Century French oil on board painting of stylised African Tribal masks by Charles LeBris. Signed, dated and numbered bottom right.
An arresting and colourful work reminiscent of the paintings of Picasso and Modigliani from the beginning of the 20th century.
Le Bris has taken as his subject the Baule masks that have given inspiration to many great artists of the 20th century. He has chosen to interpret them with a great use of colour and texture.
Baule masks are used in tribal dances during harvest festivals, in processions to honour distinguished visitors and at the funerals of important figures. The flat disk-shaped face with ringed eyes and rectangular mouth are the main features of these masks shown in this painting.
There is also an influence of 'the scream' by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The eyes are empty and the mouths open in a tear-drop head shape and come at us as if from a grey cloud imparting a spectral aura to the painting.
