Charles Landelle is considered to be an important genre, portrait and historical painter from the French school. He travelled widely, moved effortlessly among the higher echelons of society, and is best known for his Orientalist works.
He was born in Laval, Mayenne, on 2 June 1812. When he was 15 his family moved to Paris because of his father’s role in the government, and he did not return to Laval until the latter part of his life.
Landelle was encouraged to become a painter by Ary Scheffer, an acquaintance of his father through the Orléans court. He enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1837 as a student of Paul Delaroche and studied there for three years. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1841 with religious works and portraits that won the admiration of critics and visitors alike.
By 1844 Landelle was represented by the famous dealer Adolphe Goupil, and later, through the dealer Theo van Gogh, he gained the patronage of the Dutch King. His work also came to the attention of the French King Louis Phillipe, and he subsequently became an official painter and received numerous state commissions. He won a third class medal in 1842 and a first class medal in 1848. His portrait sitters often came from a high level of society. In 1852 Emperor Napolean III purchased several of his works, two of which were given as gifts to his hometown. The Emperor became a great admirer and appointed him Knight of the Legion d’Honneur. He won a medal at the 1855’s Universal Exhibition and in Philadelphia in 1876.
In 1845 Landelle travelled to Italy to study the early Renaissance masters and the effect of this tour is reflected in the numerous public commissions he was subsequently awarded. These include allegorical paintings such as La Renaissance for the Salle des Bijous at the Louvre. In 1859, he decorated six door tops for the Hall of the aide de camp at the Elysée Palace, depicting the four elements and the Allegories of War and Peace. He also decorated the salon of the Elysee. Important public commissions also included paintings for the Parisian churches of Saint-Roch, Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois and Saint-Sulpice. Alongside these commissions Landelle produced a stream of paintings of beautiful women throughout his career.
Landelle was part of an official mission to Morocco in 1866, as part of Napolean III’s embassy. He was fascinated by the landscapes and from this time onwards he became passionate about Orientalist art. He became an active member of the Society of French Orientalist Painters. He travelled through Egypt and the Nile in 1875 with Mariette, the famous Egyptologist. He then travelled to Algeria in 1880 with his son Georges. From 1881 to 1892 he used to stay every winter in Algeria, and visited Algiers, Biskra, El-Kantara, sharing his love for the country with the painters Auguste Renoir and Paul Leroy.
Landelle’s private life was tinged with tragedy. He married and had two sons, but sadly both his wife and sons pre-deceased him. He married again later in life.
In his later years Landelle did much to contribute to the creation of the Fine Art Museum of Laval, donating some of his own works as well as other more ancient paintings. At the peak of his fame in 1895, he opened the museum alongside the French President Félix Faure. Today it is known as the Musée des Sciences.
Landelle died on 13 October 1908, without descendants, but recognised as an incredibly successful artist. He had exhibited in over 200 exhibitions in France between 1841 and 1908. He also exhibited in the United States, Austria and London. During his lifetime, with the backing of Goupil, Landelle’s works achieved exorbitant prices. Their widespread diffusion in public and private collections throughout the world today still testify to his success.
Today the largest number of his works are in Laval, but may also be seen at the Louvre, the Palace of Versailles, Musée Ingres, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims, Musée de Grenoble and the Musée de Beaux-Arts de Rouen. In the US his works are found in many prominent collections. In the UK there is a striking example of his work in the large portrait of Judith in the Russell Cotes collection in Bournemouth, Dorset.

This original oil on panel is signed by the acclaimed artist Charles Landelle in the lower left section. The scene shows a young couple in a rural setting, and both are dressed in plain working clothes. The young woman is sitting on a sheaf of hay, whilst a young man sits behind her, gently tickling her with an ear of corn. She puts up her hands in mock defence, smiling and giggling at his endeavours. It is a charming scene, of innocent fun and simple times.

Charles Zacharie Landelle
Charles Zacharie LANDELLE (Laval, 1821 – Chennevières/Marne, 1908) Son of employee of the prefecture of Laval, Charles Zacharie LANDELLE accompanied his father transferred to Paris in 1827. He will not then return to Laval until the end of his life in 1895 for the inauguration of a museum of painting. Admitted in 1837 to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he followed the teachings of Paul DELAROCHE and Ary SCHEFFER. His career began with the production of portraits and large religious compositions - notably for the Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs, Saint-Sulpice and Saint-Roch churches in Paris - which were an immediate success and enabled him to gain recognition from the high society of the nineteenth century. He began at the Paris Salon of 1841 with a self-portrait noticed by Louis-Philippe, obtained a third class medal the following year and a first class in 1848. LANDELLE was also awarded at the Exposition Universelle of 1855 in Paris, and in Philadelphia. From then on he was able to follow a career as an official painter, between state commissions and portraits of the great people of his time (Portrait of Alfred de MUSSET, kept at the Palace of Versailles). Napoleon III bought him two paintings of the Beatitudes at the Salon of 1852 to donate to Laval, birthplace of the artist and hired him to participate in the decoration of the Salon des Aides de Camp at the Palais de l'Elysée. As early as the 1850s, LANDELLE discovered the Orient by his travels; especially Morocco, where he will have the opportunity to return on an official mission in 1866. He then realized on his return his famous Femme fellah, a work bought by the Emperor on his personal cassette, and unfortunately destroyed in 1870 in France. fire of the Château de Saint-Cloud. He then participated in a trip to Egypt in 1875, and went down the Nile with the Egyptologist Auguste MARIETTE. In 1880, LANDELLE discovered Algeria accompanied by his son Georges, also a painter. Conquered by the place, he decided each year between 1881 and 1892 to spend his winters in Algeria and to bring back some paintings or studies. LANDELLE was made knight of the Legion of Honor. Museums: Amsterdam (Mus. mun.), Londres (Wallace Coll.), Paris, (Mus. du Louvre, Mus. d’Art Mod.), Sydney, Angers, Caen, Compiègne, Laval, Nantes, Pau, Perpignan, Reims, Rouen, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Versailles…

Margaret Maitland Howard was an accomplished and versatile English artist whose works spanned the early to mid-20th century. Known for her evocative and often mythologically inspired oil paintings, Howard’s work reflects a deep engagement with classical themes and her knowledge of nature, and the human form. She was also proficient working in watercolours and pastels and an accomplished sculptor.
Margaret, who was always known as “Marjorie” was born in Friern, Barnet, London on 31 July 1898, the daughter of artist and civil servant Henry James Howard. She grew up at Sutton, Surrey, where she spent most of her life. She spent many years living and working from St. Katherine’s, Malgrave Road, Sutton, Surrey.
She was educated privately, at the Byam Shaw and then attended the Vicat Cole School of Art, completing her studies at the Royal Academy Schools, where she won five silver medals and other awards. She was also the recipient of a British Institute scholarship and extension and won the 1926 prize for her portrait work at the National Welsh Eisteddfod in Swansea.
She exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy, showing at least ten works of classical and biblical themes at Summer Exhibitions between 1923 and 1935. She was one of the early group of women who painted nudes, a practice which was considered somewhat risqué and vulgar in the early twentieth century. She also exhibited at other leading galleries and in the provinces and consistently pursued her art despite the challenges posed by the societal norms of the time.
Howard had a significant professional career for a woman of her generation. Just after World War II she was appointed draughtsman to the Institute of Archaeology at London University where she worked from 1948 to 1960. This is now part of University College, London. Here, she worked as an illustrator and sculptor, creating models for Professor Frederick Zeuner to use in his lectures. She also illustrated one of his important books (Zeuner, F.E. Dating the Past, London: Methuen). She also created the bust of Gordon Childe, now in the Institute’s Library. After her retirement from the Institute of Archaeology she collaborated with Ian Wolfran Cornwall on his series of books about the prehistoric world.
In 1956, whilst working for the British Institute for the Study of Iraq, she moved to Balawat and supervised the archaeological work at the site of an ancient Assyrian city in northern Mesopotamia. She subsequently prepared drawings of the Balawat Gates, which was significant and technical work.
In addition to illustrating various books on ancient history and anthropology, Howard was also known as an illustrator of fictional books, producing an illustrated edition of the Fables of Aesop that was published by John Lane at The Bodley Head in 1926. She also illustrated Elizabeth Ward...
