Charlotte Andry Gibbs"American Splendor" Pop-Art Modern Contemporary 23k Gold Flag Minimal Oil Paint2017
2017
About the Item
"American Splendor" 23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen, 26 x 50 Inches, is inspired by the American flag, elegant and whimsical, also reminiscent of American folk art and in the spirit of Pop art.
It is framed by the artist in a simple strip frame, painted in distressed white, which suits the painting extremely well.
Note: The painting is pictured at the lower right of this photograph. Better images can be forwarded. Stripes are straight, this painting needs to be re-photographed. There is also a version of this flag painting in all gold leaf ("American Splendor," 26 x 50 inches, $9000) and a "Union Jack (Red)" and a "Union Jack (White)," both 26 x 50 inches, $9000 each, and smaller flag paintings in 23 karat gold leaf and oil of the Union Jack and the Cuban flags (8 1/2 x 17 inches).
Charlotte Gibbs’ paintings of flags, such iconic Pop cultural symbols as the Coca-Cola logo, and the stark geometric forms identified with the Bauhaus and Minimalism startle our expectations of such classic imagery with their incongruous execution in the very formal mediums of 23-karat gold leaf and oil. Consistently to be found in Gibbs’ sparkly and luxurious works is the artist’s keen knowledge of the history of art, her love of referencing it, and a subtle sense of humor.
The flag series also encompasses oils that do not incorporate 23 karat gold leaf. Commissioned works in various sizes are also an option.
“Gold brightens up the darkest days of the year at Beth Urdang Gallery, and Charlotte Andry Gibbs makes liberal use of it in her paintings.
Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.”
Cate McQuaid, “The Boston Globe,” January 12, 2013
Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had 3 one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides.
Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in the Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts, where she was singled out among the 540 submissions by 340 artists by Katherine French, the Director.

Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized British flag.
"Union Jack (Blue and Gold) " is at once lovely and bold. Part of a series of 'flag' paintings (American, British, French, Japanese, Scottish) these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to both pay homage in a straightforward way to these international cultural symbols, as well as to the broader tradition of pure geometric abstraction in painting. They can be perceived on both levels. The artist's simple distressed slightly distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement.
Also available are paintings of the 'Union Jack" in white and 23 karat gold leaf and bright, 'day-glo' like colors of blue, chartreuse and red, and red and gold.

Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a detail of the graphically idealized stars of the American flag in gold leaf against an olive ground, "Canton Olive and Gold" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple natural wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement.

From GUCCI in Wonderland series
GUCCI in Wonderland series contains two parts.
First one, GUCCI in wonderland, is an inspiration that came to John Paul Fauves after doing a 10 piece collection of some Alessandro Michele art campaigns.
There was so much magic realism in the GUCCI brand and concept that transcended from being a clothing label to something more surreal. It is here when the artist decides to give a hold to his new collection for 2018 named "holy exit" and dive into this new world of colors and wonders.
The second part, Alice in Wonderland, represents the artist a world of fantasy and dreams. It seems as if the author Lewis Caroll could write like a dream.
The same concept of surrealism is what FAUVES feels about Gucci design and branding. It as if Gucci can design and create form the world of dreams, and this is what the artist wants to represent in his art GUCCI in wonderland.
ABOUT John Paul FAUVES:
John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work.
In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.”

"Alts iz farloyrn" ("All is lost")
"Alts iz Farloyrn” – the latest series by John Paul Fauves featuring large-scale mixed media paintings, sculptures, and his famous art masks.
Inspired by American idols James Dean and Steve McQueen, "Alts iz Farloyrn,” which translates to "All is Lost," was Steve McQueen’s first ever line on stage and represents Fauves own struggle with losing it all yet discovering his true self. “Alts iz Farloyrn” dives deep into the darkness that surrounded James Dean and Steve McQueen and explores their need to live fast. Through this new series, viewers are reminded that although both men overcame challenges to become the Hollywood elite, they struggled to mentally escape their troubled childhood and demons.
Recognized internationally for his Neo-Pop Expressionism, Fauves paintings deal with identity through art, mainstream culture and social media. About this series, Fauves says “I have personally lost it all and what I’ve learned is when you lose it all you can win it all again and create a new beginning!”
