About the Item

'Spring' features a strong, confident young woman shrouded in mystery, pain and strength. She lies on a bed covered in a quilt that is reminiscent of and inspired by the artist's mother's kimono. Brilliantly painted, the featured figure is adorned with furs — a hat and stole. An electrical cord is attached to one breast and held in her hand on the other end. She is missing the lower portion of one leg, which is wrapped decoratively in stockings with a twist at the end and she gazes confidently, even alluringly toward the viewer. There are references to Renaissance imagery. There is much to contemplate in this small and powerful painting, including the Icelandic blue landscape that is viewable from the bedroom window. Red velvet drapes fall from either side of the scene adding tot he drama. The oil on wood painting is 12 1/2 x 16 inches, unframed, wired and ready to hang. Condition is excellent. Colors are bold and rich. The original painting is artist signed by Chikako Okada, titled, dated Verso. Presented by Andra Norris Gallery in Burlingame, CA. Chikako Okada’s autobiographical oil paintings, bridge traditional realism with magical realism and surrealism. The artist uniquely addresses questions of the human condition through her meticulously detailed, and patterned paintings. They are mesmerizing, rich in symbolism, and reference feminine power, vulnerability, sadness, longing, and desire. The paintings often feature young women — adolescent girls and boys — mysteriously posed, leaving their circumstances to the viewer's interpretation. The artist is inspired by the paintings of European masters, Mexico's Frida Kahlo, and the American surrealists. Educated in Japan and the United States at San Francisco's Art Institute, Chikako Okada has exhibited internationally over a 30-year period. Her unique works are collected worldwide.
