About the Item

"Perseus & Andromeda" French School, 17th century circle of Francois Perrier (French 1590-1650) oil painting on canvas, framed canvas: 36 x 51.5 inches Exceptional quality early French Old Master oil painting from the 17th century. The work is of French authorship and close to Francois Perrier (1590-1650). The painting shows the hero Perseus flying through the air in combat to kill the sea monster who has come to kill Andromeda, who has been chained to a cliff by the sea shore for him. Perseus rides on the back of Pegasus, the winged horse. In Greek mythology, the kingdom of Ethiopia was ruled by the beautiful but vain queen, Cassiope; she maintained that her beauty, and that of her daughter Andromeda, was superior to that of the sea nymphs, who were the daughters of Poseidon, the god of the sea. When the nymphs became aware of her claims, they protested to their father, who retaliated by calling up a Cetus or sea monster to ravage the coastline of Ethiopia placing Cassiope's kingdom at risk. On the advice of Jupiter Ammon, the Queen, together with her husband Cepheus, decided to sacrifice her daughter Andromeda to the monster. Perseus, flying back from his killing of the gorgon Medusa, kills the monster and rescues Andromeda, whom he then marries. Francois Perrier was born in Pontarlier. During the years 1620–1625, he resided in Rome, where he took as his model the practitioner of academic Baroque classicism, Giovanni Lanfranco while he was employed on the fresco decoration of the dome of S. Andrea della Valle, one of the earliest examples of Roman Baroque ceiling decoration. On his return to France, following a brief stay in Lyon he settled in Paris in 1630. Here he worked in the classicising circle of Simon Vouet. In 1632–1634, he had as his pupil Charles Le Brun, who would become a central figure of official French painting in the age of Louis XIV. Perrier returned to Rome in 1635, remaining there for the next decade. During this period he created decorations for palazzo Peretti and saw to the publication in Paris of his great repertory of images. In 1645, once again in Paris he painted the ceiling of the gallery of the Hôtel de La Vrillière, now the seat of the Banque de France and worked with Eustache Le Sueur on the cabinet de l’amour in the Hôtel Lambert. In 1648, Perrier was one of the founders of the French Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and was elected as one of the original twelve elders in charge of its running. He died in Paris. AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE PURCHASE Condition report: The painting is in overall very good and presentable condition; having been relined and restored to a good standard within the past 50-60 years. The frame is antique and of beautiful quality - however, it has warped or bowed and whilst this is not noticeable when looking at the work head on, it is noticeable from sideways angles.
