About the Item

“Wash Day” subject by Louisiana folk artist Clementine Hunter (1887-1988). This work is oil on board measuring 10 x 12. Frame is 10 3/4 x 12 3/4. The work is well done and a good representation of one of her favorite subjects. Signed with her distinctive initials at center right. The provenance for the painting is seen on the verso: The Walsh Family of Texas. Also seen on the verso is the early framing label from a shop in Monroe, Louisiana. Often referred to as “the black Grandma Moses,” Clementine Hunter painted four to five thousand paintings, which were boldly colored images in folk art style of plantation life in Louisiana. Her subjects included everyday activities such as doing laundry and festive events including weddings, dances, and church going. She also did mural painting, and a number of her works had Christian religious subjects.

"Happy Hour" Mixed Media on Wood
By Zeal Harris
Located in West Hollywood, CA
Zeal Harris is known for creating seductive, caricaturesque, political, urban-vernacular, story paintings, with a blunt mix of high-brow/low-brow elements. Her micro-narratives offer socio-political commentary about a range of larger issues that often have to do with the layered experiences of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Almost always, the work is based on contemporary real life stories or events in daily life. She is a Los Angeles based visual artist who graduated from UCLA School of Film & Television and later with a MFA in Studio Art from Otis College of Art & Design. She has been in recent exhibitions at the Port Au Prince Haiti Ghetto Biennale, the California African-American Museum, and the Caribbean Cultural Center of the African Diaspora in New York. "Happy Hour" is an original mixed media on...
