About the Item

Story illustration for part 2 of “The Queen’s Grace” by Jan Westcott for the Ladies’ Home Journal, published April 1959, page 64. Catherine Parr holds a significant place in history as the last of King Henry VIII's six wives, serving as Queen of England and Ireland from 1543 until his death in 1547. She was the final Tudor queen consort and notably the most-married English queen with four husbands. While her role as queen is historically significant, it's merely one aspect of her compelling life. As was customary in the 16th century, noble marriages were primarily strategic, designed to consolidate family power, wealth, and lineage. Catherine, despite being an independent, well-educated, and adventurous woman, adhered to this tradition. She entered her first marriage at barely sixteen to a much older man after her father's death, faithfully fulfilling her duties by overseeing thriving households and lovingly raising her numerous stepchildren. Jan Westcott's fictional account of Catherine Parr’s life suggests that beneath a dutiful exterior was a deeply passionate woman. Westcott's narrative centers on Catherine's tumultuous and unpredictable relationship with Thomas Seymour, the forceful and reckless brother of Henry VIII's third wife, Jane Seymour. Their connection was profound, a love destined to be realized only after Catherine had been widowed three times. As Westcott enticingly describes, Seymour was "a man who spelled danger for any woman foolish enough to lose her head over him. And Katryn knew it." In the illustrated scene, Catherine Parr, recently married to Lord Borough, is in her bedchamber with her maid. An insistent tapping at the window startles them. Despite her maid’s dismay, Catherine opens the casement window to reveal Thomas Seymour, who climbs into the room. Furious at his audacious entry; she whispers, “‘How dare you!’ I never gave you a moment’s notion you could come here.” Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Center

Jean-Gabriel Domergue 1889-1962 French Josianna, jeune femme au ruban (Josianna, Young Woman With Ribbon) Signed "Jean Gabriel Domergue" (lower left) Oil on panel A young French beauty known as Josianna is the subject of this work by Jean-Gabriel Domergue, and the oil on panel is a perfect example of the portraits for which the artist is renowned. His model embodies the concept of the la belle Parisienne: slender, swan-like women bearing an unmistakable grace and style. Domergue includes a delicate pink ribbon around her neck, suggesting a fashionable garment, set against a soft pastel-colored backdrop. The artist's oeuvre encompasses women from all facets of society, from aristocratic figures such as Liane de Pougy and Nadine, Baroness de Rothschild...

Champagne for the Honeymoon
By Pruett Alexander Carter
Located in Miami, FL
Pruett Carter captures the quintessential look of the 1950's in this loosely rendered but charming work for Redbook. Bright, punchy colors define each object and are arranged in a simplified but complex composition of intersecting and overlapping planes of color. The double portrait of the girl expresses a peak moment of introspection. She ponders her situation while preparing to get dressed for her special occasion. The whole scene is imbued with suspense about her future. Carter is a great academic painter. With just a few light touches of the brush, he quickly defines the form of the subject and achieves the X factor of the work. The profile and frontal view of the girl clearly are the same person. He nails her look. This is hard to do. Do not underestimate it. Sadly, there is a reason why there are very few contemporary artists can actually paint and draw without tracing photographs or resort to naive painting. It's hard to do. It's hard to be a painter. You can not fake...
