About the Item
Constant Félix SMITH Paris, 1788 – Paris, 1873 The Dream of Athalie Oil on canvas 38 x 46 cm (43 x 51 cm with the frame) Beautiful 19th century giltwood frame Good condition (but numerous cracks)
The subject of our painting is rare. It is The Dream of Athalie, taken from Act II of Athalie, a tragedy by Jean Racine. “A naked woman lying on a richly carved bed covered with beautiful draperies; she is prey to the tortures of the most dreadful nightmare: a child armed with a dagger is standing before her, ready to strike. In the background of the painting, we see Mother Jezebel whose clothes are being torn by devouring dogs. » This is the description of the painting by Constant Félix Smith as described in the catalog of the Nîmes Museum of 1853. It is a very large painting (three meters fifty wide), by the French painter Constant Félix Smith who exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1817 A Holy Family and a Portrait of Mr. B. in his studio, in 1819 Moses and the Brazen Serpent and A Portrait and in 1822 The Dream of Athaliah. Painting attributed to the Nîmes Museum by the State in 1836 and now lost.
Constant Félix was a French painter who studied with Jacques-Louis David and then with Anne-Louis Girodet. We can compare our painting with another sketch by Smith at the Petit Palais, a religious painting "Moses and the Brazen Serpent" for the church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis in Paris.
Constant Smith was certainly of an English family. And there is a strange feeling in this painting, which reminds us of the quasi fantastic English art around 1800, such as that of William Blake for example.

The Knight's Farewell
Oil on canvas
124 x 64 cm
Not signed
A very beautiful painting, romantic and very decorative, both monumental in its composition and touching in its subject, especially since it stands out in a tight frame. The knight's farewell to his beloved is represented on a background marked by naturalism with its meadow, its flowers, its wood, its river and its very beautiful colors. The painting is of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and he is certainly French as indicated by the mtamp of the canvas merchant on the back of the canvas (the Jules Chauvin house which was active at 33 rue du Dragon in Paris between 1895 and 1937). The style of our painting is romantic, even picturesque. The knight carries the "Reichsadler", the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the lady a satchel with various signs including bear paw prints. The style is naturalistic and reminds of the English painters of the 1890s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau with religious and medieval themes and it is very close to nature with their settings of meadow, flowers and woods. The English art historian John Christian spoke of the last English Romantics in relation to these painters of the end of the century, Burne-Jones, Stanley Spencer or John William Waterhouse. Those motifs are also found here, of the meadow, flowers, wood and river that we often see in Waterhouse's art in particular. As for the composition, that reminds in particular of the English woman painter of Austrian origin Marianne Stokes...

Painted in Historical Subject, XVIIth century
Located in Milan, IT
Oil painting on canvas. French school of the seventeenth century. The scene, set at night in the garden of a villa, of which you can glimpse the ornate facade on the right and in which the fountain gushing with cherubs stands out, under a dark sky and further obscured by heavy clouds, proposes two figures who entertain each other in conversation : an elderly modestly dressed is sternly admonishing a seated young man, richly dressed, who seems instead to make the gesture of mea culpa with his hand. The physiognomy and the gestures of the two characters, together with the style of the clothes, would refer to the philosopher Aristotle who was called to the court of Macedon to be the tutor...
