About the Item

Cristofano Rustici called il Rusticone was an artist active in Siena between the 16th and 17th century, son of Lorenzo Brazzi called il Rustico (Siena 1521-1572). Even if his artistic training started in the family workshop, he was mostly very influenced by the Flemish artist Bernhard van Rantwijk, who was also living in the Tuscan town at the same time. The subject of the four paintings are the Cardinal Virtues, here represented with their typical attributes (the column for the Courage, the mirror and the snake for the Prudence, washbasin and pitcher for the Temperance, sword and scale for the Justice). The location is set in a pink and grey sky and it’s possible to see the drawing of a mixtilinear frame that the artist left unfinished. The figures are lively and cheerful painted with rapid touches of the brush and with a technique meant to imitate frescoes. They express the senese figurative tradition mixted with the expressive freedom of the Flemish art typical of Rustici style and they can be dated to the last part of the 16th century thanks to comparisons with his mature production, especially with the “Martyrdom of the saints Felicita and Cristofano” in a private collection or “The Multiplication of the loaves and fishes” in the Chigi Saracini collection in Siena.
