About the Item
Uruguayan painter D. Rodríguez Candhalés (1919-2004) traveled extensively in his dual careers as a successful painter and a professional soccer player. With this work, painted in Peru in 1961, he captured a village scene amid a snowstorm whiteout. The women have hunkered down close to each other, staying in place while they wait to sell their wares when it clears. You can almost hear the low murmuring and laughter as they catch up with each other’s lives. Bundled in their traditional layered woven wool skirts or Polleras, topped by rectangular cloths worn over their woolen jackets, they manage to keep warm.
As a child, Candhalés was passionate about sports, competing and eventually winning 18 titles in swimming and soccer. He was a defender on Uruguay's national team. But he was also a self-taught painter. Upon his retirement from football, he studied painting in Paris. And after returning home to Uruguay, he exhibited his French works at the Galeria Moretti and later at the Salon Nacional de Arte de Montevideo. In 1958 he began a world tour, which include the U.S., during which he held some exhibitions and a series of portraits.
