Daphné Dorel, born 1974 in Paris, is a French contemporary artist. Especially in recent years, she achieved recognition with her art.
In her works, the viewer gets the opportunity to immerse himself in a personal interpretation of the depicted landscapes. The workrange moves through various moods, from joyful summery shorelines to dramatically dark scenes. She shows not only the idyll that a landscape can create, but also the fear and the threat of loss that it harbours.
Dorel mostly uses photographs as reference material, filled with young to old figures, which she applies to the canvas using a combination of oil paint and tempera. In most cases, the clothing and poses of the people showsn are reminiscent of the 1930s and 1950s. These elements reveal a blending of times – a past that is depicted in the present, a blending that evokes a certain melancholy in the viewer and reminds him or her of childhood and a time that lies in the past.
Dorel’s works are characterised by a interplay between hard and soft outlines. On the one hand, she depicts the pictorial elements clearly and precisely, while she enjoys the experimentation with abstraction and the blurring of colours. The colour palette in her oevre ranges from bright, warm to dark, cold shades. This reflects the cheerful yet sombre character of her art and opens up to several possible levels of interpretation of landscape painting.
