About the Item
Dario Campanile’s Your Move (1999) is a layered and symbolic painting that explores humanity’s critical role in environmental preservation and extinction. At its center is a child—representing the next generation—poised to make a decision through a surreal, living chessboard. The child holds the queen, the most powerful piece on the board, suggesting the potential and responsibility of youth. Below the chessboard, toy dinosaurs symbolize species already lost, while endangered animals above still teeter on the edge of survival. A lion, standing regally behind the child, echoes themes of dominance and fragility—the so-called “king of the jungle” now reduced to a silent overseer. Above them, a vulture and a dove trace opposing arcs in the sky: death and peace in flight, competing forces above a scene where everything hangs in the balance. The painting functions as a metaphorical plea, asking viewers to consider what will remain and what will vanish, and who will make that choice.
Dario Campanile is an Italian-born artist whose career spans over six decades of transformation, passion, and philosophical depth. Raised in Rome, his artistic journey began as a teenager when a prolonged illness confined him to bed—his father gifted him a set of oil paints, sparking what would become a lifelong devotion to visual storytelling. A self-taught painter, Campanile’s early mastery of realism drew the attention of Salvador Dalí, who dubbed him “The Roman Master,” and he was also influenced by metaphysical artist Giorgio de Chirico. Over the years, Campanile’s work evolved from precise realism and surrealism into a freer, more intuitive style of abstract expressionism, which he now embraces as his truest form of creative release. His practice is rooted in a philosophy of surrender, channeling creativity through childlike openness and trust in the subconscious. Beyond the canvas, his career includes landmark moments such as redesigning the Paramount Pictures logo in 1986 and painting a portrait of the Dalai Lama for the global “Missing Peace” project. Now based in the U.S., Campanile continues to create with undiminished energy, finding constant inspiration in the beauty of the natural world and the evolving landscape of the human spirit.

CUBAN-AMERICAN, DATED 2017
53.25 X 41.5 INCHES
"Checkmate" is that great end-finale, that surprised everyone because you basically were playing or getting ready for a totally different game.
An unexpected move from the governments who always have a "card up their sleeve" to screw you.
Yuri Martinez Ramos was born in Havana, Cuba on November 24, 1964.
He studied at the Elemental School of Plastic Arts from 1975 – 1979 and the National School of the Arts from 1979 – 1983.
Martinez’ figurative paintings have been compared to Botero because of his satirical social commentary. His style, however, is uniquely his own with typically vibrant Latin colors and use of expressive magical realism. His paintings tell his story and the story of the Cuban dilemma.
Martinez was granted permission by the US Justice Department after much effort with Cuban authorities to come to the US with his family and pursue his career outside Cuba. He now lives and works in Texas.
