About the Item

Faintly signed lower right, 'D. Mayernik' for David Mayernik (American, 20th century) and painted circa 1985. A period, Post-Impressionist style study of a woman in a turban looking proudly upwards. A warm and engaging piece by a bravura hand. Artist, design architect, author and educator David Mayernik studied fresco painting with restorer Leonetto Tintori and has painted frescoes for the TASIS campus in Lugano, churches in Ticino and Tuscany, and the Palio for his adopted city of Lucca, Italy. He has exhibited widely and with success, including in Italy, Austria, England and America; his work has also been featured in fine arts magazines, including American Artist. Mayernik is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA). Influenced by Renaissance ideology and aesthetic values, David Mayernik is a founder of the Tuscan Renaissance Academy, a cultural association based in Lucca with the goal of promoting the principles of Renaissance art and culture. Currently an Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture, Mayernik has also taught with the New York Academy of Art, the University of Virginia's Erasmus-Jefferson Scholars program in Tuscany and the Institute for the Study of Classical Architecture. A successful architectural designer, Mayernik has been named one of the top forty architects of his generation in the United States. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Gabriel Prize for a research study in France, and, along with Thomas N. Rajkovich, the Arthur Ross Award for their design of the Minnesota State Capitol grounds. Signed lower right, 'Ruth Peabody' for Ruth Eaton Colburn Peabody (American, 1893-1966) and painted circa 1955. Born in Highland Park, Illinois, Ruth Peabody was taught to paint as a child by her mother, artist Elanor Colburn, and first studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. The two women moved to Laguna Beach, California, in 1924, and became active in the local art scene. At their studio, Peabody sculpted fountains and memorial plaques when not teaching, privately and at Laguna Beach High School. Over the course of a long career, Ruth Peabody exhibited widely and with success including at the Panama Pacific Exhibition (1915), Art Institute of Chicago, Oakland Art Gallery (1932)and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1931) and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In 1939, the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego presented Peabody's abstract works in a solo exhibition, the first show of its kind by a regional artist. Her work is held in private and public collections including the San Diego Museum and Orange County Museum.
