About the Item

This dynamic image of two men forging a crankshaft was done for the GM Waldorf Exhibition sometime between 1949 to 1961. The General Motors exhibition at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, best known as the GM Motorama, was a series of elaborate auto shows held. This would have been completed sometime before the artist died in 1960. The highly sought-after subject of men hard at work building America was a popular subject of Cornwell's mural work and also of other WPA artists. Here, he expertly uses gold leaf applied to the painting to highlight the workers and the red-hot heat of the furnace. Dean Cornwell (March 5, 1892 – December 4, 1960) was a left-handed American illustrator and muralist. His oil paintings were frequently featured in popular magazines and books as literary illustrations, advertisements, and posters promoting the war effort. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, he was a dominant presence in American illustration. At the peak of his popularity, he was nicknamed the "Dean of Illustrators". Framed: 25.5 x 21.5 Inches Visible Image Size: 10.5 x 15.75 Inches Not signed on front, but has Artist's stamp en verso. Framed under glass and matted.
