About the Item

"I See Color" is a dramatic psychological study of personal discovery painted in black and white with the face reflected on a window painted in color. Dennis states: It was a time when my realities were painted black and white and my dreams were in color. They were the years when imagination was my closest friend and dusty cornfields my playground. Those were the years when a cardboard refrigerator box was my most sought after toy and hidden treasures were found buried inside boxes of Lucky Elephant Popcorn. Remembering those years, Dennis paints with such introspection. Artist Statement: “A successful work of art should visually communicate the heart and soul of the artist. It should stir the imagination of the viewer and illicit a response. My goal is to capture the spirit of my subject and to provoke the engagement of the audience creating a visual excitement for a renewed appreciation of the subject. This is done not by rendering an exact likeness, but by artistically reacting to what I see and feel then visually imparting that same response to the viewer. Minor details fade away but the emotional exchange between the subject and artist provides lasting memories. I cannot remember the thousand and fifty third leaf of the tree, but I do remember the coolness of its shade on that hot summer day.” Canadian Artist Dennis K. Smith’s distinctive artistic expressions result in works that come alive through the use of rhythmic brush work, choreographed passages of colour and strong contrast. His work projects honesty, simplicity and serenity that causes’ one to stop and to engage with the painting and its message. His lino prints were exhibited and sold in the Canada - Japan Exchange Print Exhibition held at the Chiba Shimin Gallery Image in Japan. He has exhibited at The Royal Ontario Museum, 2010, has had solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group shows. Having worked for Chrysler Canada for thirty-four and a half years, Smith, now retired, teaches art full time in his LaSalle studio. He enjoys encouraging and motivating fellow artists to be true to their vision and to be honest in their artistic expressions and above all to let their work identify who they are.

Fred Cress Figurative Painting "Mirror, Mirror"
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY Complicated exchanges between individuals engaged in conversations, an argument, boredom, a caring exchange, toasting, so many human interactions within an almost five and a half foot square painting containing up to 25 people has been magnificently composed and is continuously captivating. The dynamism and flow of humanity in “Mirror, Mirror” can be compared to the dynamism and flow of humanity found in Breughel’s “Wedding Dance” owned by and located at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Frederick Harold Cress was a British painter who migrated to Australia and won the Archibald Prize in 1988 with a portrait of John Bread. Cress was born in Poona, British Raj, but went to England with his parents in 1948, when he was ten. He was educated at the Birmingham College of Art in England, and migrated to Australia in 1962 as a "ten pound Pom", meaning that he only had to pay ten pound for his fare to Australia. Cress met the painter Anne Judell and married her in 1967; they divorced in 1991. He started his career painting figuratively, but became well known for his abstract work in the late 60s and 70s. He returned to figurative painting in the late 80s after he won the Archibald Prize with a portrait of his friend and colleague, John Beard...

'Impromptu #9, ' by Josette Simon-Gestin, Acrylic on Canvas Painting
By Josette Simon-Gestin
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
"An impromptu in music demonstrates its particular ability to translate the romantic effusion of a moment or of a mood. As I am looking through the window, the exterior scenery composes with my mood a complicated picture," says Simon-Gestin. "This piece expresses my complicated feelings about life." Impromptu #9 features two female figures conversing against a backdrop of rich blue windows, a vase of red flowers, and complimentary patterns and shapes. "After studying at the Beaux-arts in France, I have been painting, drawing, etching, making collage in the USA and in Italy, Austria, Denmark and China. In all these countries my work has been exhibited and collected. Numerous series have accompanied me during my itinerances. Questions about identity and my relation to the world mark my road. I wish to express the complexity, the beauty, the ambiguity of the world as I feel it. I paint women and children in a universe of fantasy made of strange animals in baroque situations. In all these women, there is something of me but the sum of all these women does not equal me or I would have nothing more to say." -- Josette Simon...
