About the Item

Black and red toned realistic acrylic painting by Cuban artist Douglas Perez Castro. The painting features a fictional scene of a black female figure serving food to a white couple set against a large poster pointing to the dramatic realities of discrimination. The poster text reads "Poder Negro" and "Poder Blanco." Signed, titled, and dated on reverse. Currently hung in a highly carved gold frame. Dimensions Without Frame: H: 19.75 in x W: 27.13 in Artist Biography: Douglas Perez Castro is a Cuban artist who adapts real-life picture of economic, social and cultural life on the island of his birth with care, irony, and humor. "In doing so, he appropriates the iconography and techniques of the Cuban avant-garde of the mid-19th century but also of the 17th-century Dutch masters. As he himself as expressed it, this means that he transports and establishes himself between his own Cuban history and the history of art." Works such as Troyano, Picazzo, La República Habanera and La Ciudad de las Oportunidades have a powerful visual load due to their content and their relationship with fiction, just as well as his older and more recent pieces. Castro's work is not only limited to the historical but gives way to the society today with an alienated reality.

"Beatificado" Modern Tabloid Inspired Religious Social Commentary Painting
Located in Houston, TX
Modern, large scale social commentary painting by California artist John Valdez. Comes with the original sketch as well as a book about the artist. Inspired by the cover of a Mexican tabloid, Valadez invites the viewer to examine the duality of a society that mourns the death of an iconic religious leader and neglects those close to them who are perhaps deemed not worthy of consideration. The bold red headline reads “El cardenal Gabiri será beatificado” (Cardinal Gabiri will be beatified) above a large accompanying image of the cardinal in his casket and two smaller images, one of sobbing mourners and another of the cardinal sitting at the altar. Dividing the image is a subhead that reads, “El pueblo católico está de luto” (the Catholic people are mourning) placed above a depiction of four young boys who seem to be sniffing glue. The adjacent text reads “The indifference of the adults is the cause behind the issues these forgotten children have to live.” This work was exhibited at the Pacific Standard Time, Long Beach Museum of Art in 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2012, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL in 2013. Signed by artist in front lower right corner as well as titled and dated in front lower left corner. Currently unframed, but options are available. Artist Biography: John Valadez...

In a household where constant turmoil and violence were more apparent than most a young Pelayo met escape and peace within the confines of himself and his own creativity. Hispanic born in the heavy beating heart of Los Angeles on the seventh day of June 1996. Pelayo was caught in the crossfires of everything that surrounded him but art served as his only guidance. After dropping out of college Pelayo turned from his hyperrealistic pencil portraits to oil painting where his passions grew more immensely. As of today Pelayo’s work is most influenced and fueled by the crème de la crème of old master painters like Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Velazquez as well as graffiti artists such as RETNA, Shepard Fairey, and EL MAC. In 2017 his work caught the attention and landed in the firm grasp of renown rapper and collector Alvin “Westside Gunn” Worthy. He has created several album covers and artworks for the Buffalo rap moguls music label Griselda Records including his personal collection. Pelayo’s paintings are widely recognized and sought out from all over the globe. His collectors include Sean “Diddy” Combs, Westside Gunn, Benny The Butcher, Jeff Hamilton, Shepard Fairey, Jaysse Lopez, and Everlast of House of Pain just to name a few. Pelayo is often described as the coming of A New Renaissance...
