About the Item

This atmospheric composition by Edgar L. Pattison depicts a vivid street scene in Tangier, Morocco, framed by a monumental arched doorway rendered in warm, sunlit tones. The viewer’s eye is drawn through the arch into a narrow street alive with local activity. Figures dressed in traditional Moroccan robes and head coverings—carefully observed in their distinct postures and gestures—convey a sense of daily rhythm and cultural vitality. At the centre, a man mounted on a camel passes through the gateway, his movement introducing a subtle diagonal that balances the architectural symmetry of the arch. Pattison’s treatment of light and texture reflects his background as both a painter and designer. His brushwork is controlled yet sensitive, emphasizing the interplay between architectural structure and the flowing drapery of the figures’ robes. The subdued but harmonious palette—dominated by ochres, soft blues, and earthen tones—captures the North African atmosphere without resorting to exaggeration. The surface patterning and linear precision reveal his training in the decorative arts, while the composition demonstrates the observational realism characteristic of British Orientalist painters of the early twentieth century. Through Tangier, Pattison combines ethnographic attentiveness with compositional refinement, producing a work that is both documentary and aesthetically composed—a serene evocation of light, texture, and human presence within an exoticised urban landscape. Edgar Laurence Pattison was born in Bloomsbury, London, in 1872 and died in 1950. He studied at the Lambeth School of Art (City & Guilds), establishing his training in London. Beginning in the 1890s, Pattison worked as a freelance decorative-artist and designer, creating wallpapers, cretonnes, tapestries, and textile designs. From about 1906 onwards, he exhibited widely as a painter and printmaker—his works appearing at venues including the Royal Academy of Arts (London), the New English Art Club, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and various Leicester and Lefevre galleries. Pattison also became a member of the Society of Graphic Artists. Throughout his career he developed a specialization in Middle-Eastern and Oriental subject-matter, especially in his prints and etchings. Pattison’s practice spanned both painting and printmaking, with a particular emphasis on etching and drypoint in his print work. For example his colour-etching Hammersmith, London (c. 1941) shows his use of multiple plate colours—brown, red, yellow, blue and black. In his decorative-arts background he brought a refined sense of pattern and surface to his textile and wallpaper designs, which likely informed his careful line-work and colour modulation in prints. His pictorial subjects—often Orientalist in theme—are treated with a clarity of drawing, an attentive handling of architectural and geographic detail, and a controlled tonal range. His painterly work tends to feature lucid, clear-lighted compositions, with an emphasis on surface texture, compositional precision and evocative sense of place rather than highly expressive brushwork. In summary, Pattison can be characterised as a British artist whose design-trained eye merged into his print and painting practice: crisp drawing, refined surface treatment, moderate palette, and an abiding interest in travel, place and decorative gesture.
