About the Item

A fine impressionist painting of a ballerina by American artist Edmund William Greacen (1877-1949). Greacen was born in New York City and later lived with his family in Giverny, France near Paris, where he was influenced by Monet and became good friends with his son-in-law, Theodore E. Butler. Greacen met Monet only once, but the memory was a lasting one. After living in Giverny, Greacen and his family returned to New York and became active in the art community, they also visited Old Lyme, Connecticut, where many artists resided permanently and others spent their summers. There he met Hassam, William Chadwick, and many others who painted in a manner similar to his. Greacen exhibited at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery. He won the Salmagundi Prize in 1922 and the National Arts Club prize and medal in 1923 and 1935. In 1921 he was made an Associate member of the National Academy of Design; and in 1935 he became an Academician. Oil on panel, signed and dated lower left, titled “Ballerina” on verso Meredith Long & Co Gallery label (Houston TX) and housed in a carved giltwood frame with a linen lined and gilt inset.
