Sybils Telling Cosmic Jokes on Mankind, Mythical Figurative Abstract Painting

1960s

About the Item

This original 1960s oil painting titled Sybils Telling Cosmic Jokes on Mankind is a striking semi-abstract work by renowned 20th-century Denver modernist artist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). The painting features bold, vivid colors of orange, yellow, red, pink, green, and blue, brought to life with thick impasto brushwork. The composition showcases Marecak's signature fusion of mythology and abstract expression, with cosmic figures conveying humor and cosmic energy. Oil on canvas, this piece is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner and is titled and dated verso. It is presented in its original frame, enhancing the dynamic, playful theme of the painting. The artwork’s outer dimensions are 42 ⅝ x 36 ½ x 1 ¾ inches, with an image size of 42 x 36 inches. Provenance: Estate of Edward Marecak About the Artist: Edward Marecak, born in 1919 to Slovakian immigrant parents, was influenced by his childhood exposure to Carpathian folk tales, which later shaped his artistic journey. A prolific and self-taught artist, Marecak developed a unique style, blending surrealism, mythology, and abstract art. His fascination with Greek mythology led him to depict figures such as Circe, Persephone, and Hera in modern contexts, often intertwined with vibrant color and symbolic themes. Marecak’s education included studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Cranbrook Academy of Art, as well as military service during World War II. Upon returning from the Aleutian Islands, he spent the rest of his life in Colorado, where he was both a dedicated educator and artist. His works, often imbued with personal experiences and dreamlike qualities, earned him recognition as one of Colorado’s preeminent modernists. Despite a relatively low exhibition profile during his lifetime, Marecak’s works are now part of prestigious collections, including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Denver Art Museum, and Kirkland Museum. Marecak’s legacy continues to resonate, as his bold use of color, intricate design, and mythology-based narratives remain central to his posthumous recognition in the art world.
