About the Item
Spring Scattering Stars is a 1927 Neoclassical painting by American artist Edwin Blashfield. It depicts a nude female allegory of spring on a wet moon scattering stars throughout the sky. Signed and dated lower left. From the Estate of Charles Martignette, Heritage Auctions Blashfield studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts after initial coursework in engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He moved to Europe in 1867 to study with Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat in Paris and remained abroad until 1881, traveling, painting, and exhibiting his work in salon shows. His academic background in painting and extensive travels in Italy to study fresco painting melded in work marked by delicacy and beauty of coloring. Following his early success as a genre painter, Blashfield became a widely admired muralist whose work ornamented the dome of the Manufacturers' and Liberal Arts building at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, in Chicago, several state capitols, and the central dome of the Library of Congress. He was a member of numerous arts organizations, including the National Academy of Design, the National Society of Mural Painters in which he served as President from 1909 to 1914.[1] American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Blashfield served, from 1920–26, as President of the National Academy of Design. Among his many honors, Blashfield was awarded a Gold Medal by the National Academy of Design in 1934, an honorary membership in the American Institute of Architects, and an honorary doctorate of fine arts by New York University in 1926. He served on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts from 1912–16. His circle of friends included sculptor Daniel Chester French, painters John Singer Sargent and Maxfield Parrish, and architect Cass Gilbert.[2] His style was influenced by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Jean-Paul Laurens, and Paul Baudry. With his wife he wrote Italian Cities (1900) and translated Vasari's Lives of the Painters (4 vols., 1897), and was well known as a lecturer and writer on art. He became president of the Society of Mural Painters, and of the Society of American ArtistsExcellent. Edwin Howland Blashfield
Born in New York in 1848 he detoured from his plan to enter Harvard and instead left for a ten year sojourn in Paris to study painting. He exhhibited at the Paris Salon from 1874-1892 and also at the Royal Academy in London. He continued his travels through Europe eventually returning and establishing a studio in New York where he became well known for his large scale painting done on commission for the most prominent families. He is noted for the great central dome in the Library of Congress in Washington among dozens of other large public works. He was also known for genre, portraits, ruins and Indians. He developed a distinctive format that put real and Allegorical figures together in pictures with Historical and moral themes. In both easel paintings and his murals Blashfield proceeded from careful black-and-white studies to finished oils on canvas. He often used a frieze-like format for his classically beautiful women depicted with elegant line and rich, inventive color. He understood "thoroughly the decorative qualities in great oil paintings but saw the mural as very different from the easel painting." About the mural, he wrote, "developed into beauty applied to utility, and it culminated as a supreme teacher, through the arts, of patriotism, morals and history. were credited as being integral to the American Renaissance revival of decoration in public buildings. He was a long time member of the Architectural League of New York and the National Society of Mural Painters, and was president of the National Academy of Design from 1920-26, which honored him in 1934 with a special gold medal for commitment to the arts and the academy. He passed away in 1936.

- What Are They Looking At ? Sexy Nude Naive Caribbean Art , Swimming Pool PartyBy Wilson BigaudLocated in Miami, FLA young man at a crowded upper-class Haitian swimming pool attracts attention. We see him only from the back in a Magritte like pose. Transfixed expressions of some of the nubile bare-breasted bathing beauties and one man with his hands down his pants give us a clue that the mystery man is special. This is a fascinating work packed with drama and overflowing with pent-up emotion. Bigaud's narrative is as complex as his figural composition of lookers and swimmers. Notice the sight lines of the lookers go back to front while the two swimmers go from left to right. The twenty-two figures are contained in the rectangular shape of the pool, which is pushed to the front of the picture plane. The cars of the pool partygoers are seen in the background with one witness. He is fully clothed and is most likely a chauffeur. The fully clothed female at the pool offering food is a servant. A boxy-looking radio with a pack of cigarettes and the style of the cars give glue to the date. Most Haitian art depicts average working people. The pool party departs from that tradition and shows life of the Haitian upper class. Most likely, this was painted in Petion-Ville. The higher the elevation in Port-au-Prince the more wealthy the homes. Although the artist's painting technique may be described as naive or lacking polish. It's one of the reasons why the work radiates charm and interest. The painting is oversized with huge dimensions of 55 x 48 and will be a statement in any room. Wilson Bigaud is considered to be a Haitian master. The condition is good. Three repaired one-inch issues on the extreme center and upper right edge. Visible only on close inspection. Otherwise presents very well and is elegantly framed, ______________________________________ Haitian master Wilson Bigaud is renowned for works portraying everyday life and rites of passage—vodou rituals, fortune-tellers, weddings, cockfights, and carnivals—with voluminous figures and lucid colors. Born in Port-au-Prince, in 1946 Bigaud was among the first to attend DeWitt Peters’s Le Centre d’Art d’Haïti, where he studied with Hector Hyppolite...Category
