About the Item
Elena Burykina's "Kawari Kabuto" (2024) is an original, handmade oil painting on panel.
Artist Statement:
Helmet in the Shape of a Crouching Rabbit Japanese 17th century Higher ranking samurai wanted to stand out so that their military achievements would be noticed on the battlefield. This trend gave rise to the highly individualized helmet form of the kawari-kabuto. The entire cranial portion of this kawari-kabuto is made from one piece of iron and shaped to represent a crouching rabbit, a technique referred to as ichimai-uchidashi. Kawari-kabuto designs can draw from nature, religion, geography, or myths and legends. In choosing the motif of his kawari-kabuto helmet, a samurai made a statement, which in turn needed to be understood by both his allies and enemies. Here, the ear guards (fukigaeshi) are shaped as waves, which in combination with the rabbit alludes to the Noh play Chikubushima a reference an educated samurai would have understood immediately, informing him about the educated mind of his opponent as well. Chikubushima is about the retainer of an emperor who travels to Lake Biwa in order to pray at a famous shrine on Chikubushima Island. When the ferry reaches the island, the courtier recites in praise of the scenic beauty the following lines: Reflections of green trees sink down, and fishes climb their branches; the moon dives beneath the lake, and the rabbit of the moon sports upon the waves. (Tyler, Royall. Buddhism in Noh. Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, vol.14, no.1987.) Historical references per the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
About the Artist:
Elena is an artist based in Chattanooga, TN USA.
Elena always wanted to be an artist. As a child in Ukraine, she received a classical art education which she used for over a decade as an architect. It was an applied form of her desire to create art. Elena moved away from architecture into teaching art to children and painting when she could, and finally she was able to focus all her time being an artist and learning.
She moved to America in 2013 and turned her full attention to painting.
She tries to use every opportunity to learn anything new – new tools, mediums, techniques – anything new at all.
Elena’s favorite subjects to paint are people with their personalities, moods, thoughts, and favorite things. “I really like to explore the personalities of my models through building the structure of portraiture with oil paint and paintbrush.”
Her current focus is portraiture. She seeks a connection with the model that she can translate to the surface.
Elena is a member of The Portrait Society of America. She received an award of Signature Status with the Portrait Society of America in 2022.In
