Born in a tiny jungle village in Mozambique to a Portuguese bullfighter and the daughter of one of the leaders of the French Resistance in Provence, Jose Da Silveira spent the first years of his life shuttling between Portugal and France, eventually settling in Marseille.
Silveira painted from an early age, studying with prominent Provençale artists including Pierre Ambrogiani. At the age of sixteen, he began showing his work professionally, evolving a style that combined contemporary techniques and forms with strong, expressive color. Silveira favors figural subjects with a particular emphasis on the female figure and maternal themes. Since 1997, the artist has made his home in California.
