About the Item

DUTCH b. Deventer, 1960 ERIK RENSSEN is an independent artist—painter, sculptor, and traditional print-maker—active in the Netherlands. For over thirty years, Erik has studied, tested, and applied the methods and visual language of Picasso to subjects drawn from his own life and experience. From his studio in Broek in Waterland and his gallery in Amsterdam on the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat, within sight of the world famous Rijksmuseum, the artist has garnered a worldwide clientele and group of collectors for his colorful, highly-finished, modern-style paintings. Erik was born in beautiful, old Dutch village of Deventer in 1960. Initially, he studied architecture, evidenced by his strong sense of line and draftsmanship as well as his interest in architectural subjects, before devoting his life to art. Renssen’s admiration for the work of Picasso inspired him to undertake a meticulous study of the great master’s work, including working techniques (for instance, Renssen has painted with Wijzonol, a Dutch brand of common house paint akin to the inexpensive house paint used by Picasso on many of his paintings during the war years when expensive pigments were impossible to come by). At this point in his career, Erik has thoroughly internalized Picasso’s visual idiom, or language, and now uses it to explore his own interests and tell his own narratives. Renssen’s blonde women are not Marie-Thérèse, but rather the women in his own life, such as his muse, Suzka; Nôtre Dame Cathedral is now his beloved Rijksmuseum; Paris is transformed into Amsterdam; and the coffee pot he paints is the one that he finds across from him at breakfast. Although Erik Renssen is primarily a painter, his constant curiosity has drawn him to the charms and trials of other artistic media. He enjoys sculpting in bronze and has ventured into the graphic arts, creating limited edition lithographs and linocuts. Erik tests the boundaries of his talent and does not feel any limitations when it comes to exploring color, style and subject matter. Portraiture, still-life, cityscapes and representations of family life are all frequent themes in his art.
